Joanne, I totally agree that the priests should be mindful of how the people in their Church, has or doesn't have, and live accordingly. The Church I attend is in a very poor area of Montgomery County, PA. I've never been in the living quarters of the rectory, but I doubt if our pastor could afford to live above his people. Thank God for that. ;) Fran Devine Heidel

1.Diocesan priests - Diocesan priests commit their lives to serving the people of a diocese, which is a church administrative region, and typically work in parishes, schools, or other Catholic institutions as assigned by the bishop of their diocese. Diocesan priests take a vow of celibacy and obedience. 2.Religious priests - Religious priests belong to a religious order such as the Dominicans, Franciscans, and Jesuits. Religious priests get their direction from their superiors within their religious order. Religious orders typically specialize in teaching or performing missionary work. In addition to taking a vow of celibacy and obedience, religious priests take a vow of poverty. Cheers Cara
William Straham of the town of Carlow, Cabinet Maker on the 22nd Day of February in the 46th Year of The Reign of our Sovereign Lord George the Third, by the Grace of God of the United Kingdom of Great Britain, and Ireland, King, Defender of the Faith, and so-forth at Carlow did assault Pierce Brerton, a Sub-Constable, by order of James Butler, Esquire, Sovereign of the town of Carlow pursuant to Act of Parliament, , in due Execution of his duty and forcibly unlawfully did take and rescue one pig which he seized and had in his custody as being a Publick Nuisance.
That is correct. Only order priests take a vow of poverty. Maureen N In a message dated 3/6/2010 3:00:26 P.M. Hi All! In a 1970s article about John Amnesty Nolan and in a book on Ballon parish, Fr. MacSuibhne alludes to a tombstone erected (supposedly in the old Ballon cemetery) by Rev. P.C. Nolan, P.P. Rathvilly (1855-1885) to the memory of an ancestor and reading something like the following (based upon Fr. MacSuibhne's recollection from memory): "On the requisition of the Rev. Patrick Nolan, P.P., Rathvilly, this stone was erected to his father's great grandfather's father .". The name Garret also supposedly appears on the tombstone and the family in question is believed to have been the Ballykealey Nolans. MY QUESTION!! Has anybody seen such a tombstone? I have scoured most cemeteries in Co. Carlow and documented most Nolan tombstones. I have not come across this tombstone. I have not done the Rathvilly cemetery so it might be there. If anyone in their search through Co. carlow cemeteries comes across a tombstone fitting the description above I would be very grateful to know how the inscription reads. It is my understanding that whether or not an explicit vow of poverty is taken depends on the order. I agree that diocesan priests don't have to take an explicit vow of poverty. I don't think people expected priests to live like peons (myself included) but I do think that living an openly opulent lifestyle while a large portion of your congregation is struggling to even eat goes counter to their Christian mission. (IMO) Refering to the Canon Law: Referring to:Section I: Institutes of Consecrated Life Title I: Norms Common To All Institutes Of Consecrated Life (Cann. 573 - 606) Can 573 §2. The Christian faithful freely assume this form of living in institutes of consecrated life canonically erected by competent authority of the Church. Through vows or other sacred bonds according to the proper laws of the institutes, they profess the evangelical counsels of chastity, poverty, and obedience and, through the charity to which the counsels lead, are joined in a special way to the Church and its mystery. My use of the word "vow" was technically incorrect. Whether or not one believes in such behavior as a tenet is another matter. I can't help thinking that 232 baptisms in one year in one parish is a formidable number. In the parish I follow in Kilkenny it was comparable, and I assume it was the same for every parish in Ireland, which would yield a truly awesome number for such a small country. Jack Langton
Nationalist, Feb. 1921. Probably the greatest sensation of the present crisis in Ireland was the escape of Frank Teeling and two others from Kilmainham Prison on Monday night last. According to Dublin Press reports a lorry-load of men uniformed in khaki, wearing steel helmets and carrying the usual arms drove up to the prison gate, and the officer in charge presented a warrant purporting to come from Dublin Castle ordering the prison authorities to hand over Teeling and two others, Donnelly and Stewart, for removal "to another place" . Teeling was under sentence of death for his alleged complicity in the Mount Street shootings. The three men were removed and have not since been heard of. Military headquarters on Wednesday night, however, while admitting the escape , emphatically deny that any hoax was perpetrated. Thereafter the sensational incident is a mystery.
Nationalist, Feb. 1921. Right Rev. T.G.F. Day, the new Protestant Bishop of Ossory, Ferns and Leighlin, recently visited Maryborough and preached at Sunday morning and evening Services. At the Parochial Hall he delivered an interesting and instructive lecture on India.
Nationalist, February, 1921. Raids and Arrests. In the past few weeks lorries laden with soldiers arrived in Killeshin and district, the houses visited being those of Messrs. John Gaffeny, William Rourke, Thomas Curran, and Henry Bolton's Kelogue. No arrests were made. Messrs. John Dunne, Patrick Byrne, and Thomas Whitney, all of Monure were also visited and searched but nothing was found. On Friday week an exhaustive and fruitless search was made at a sandpit near Stradbally, and digging operations were carried on for some time. So far as can be ascertained the excavations revealed no discoveries. AUXILIARIES VISIT TO CARLOW. Early on Sunday morning a lorry load of cadets visited Carlow and searched the following houses --- Mr Gerald Donnelly's, Mr. Michael Hughes's and Mrs. Leonard's in Tullow Street. There was nothing found in any of the places. Jim McDarby, Graiguecullen, was sentenced to 12 months, instead of four, as published in last week's issue. On Sunday, about noon, the military visited Stradbally, and arrested Michael J. O'Connor, Sculptor, Stradbally, and conveyed him to Maryborough. On Monday morning the police arrested John Nolan, The Hermitage, Monasterevan, and brought him to Portarlington Barracks. [ note added in 2010. there was an "informer" at work as all of the people named above were active members of the I.R.A., and all the houses raided were regarded as "safe-houses" by republicans, ----The information that the military was operating under was spot on...]
Nationalist, May 1921. Death Warning. On Saturday evening last two masked and armed men called at the residence of Mr. W.P. Morrow, at Newtown , Co. Carlow, Master, Carlow Union, (The Workhouse ), and delivered a notice to Mr. Morrow's young daughter to the effect that unless he ceased his activities in local land agitation, he would be shot. The note was signed "Anti-Sinn Fein" and below was the legend "God Save the King". [ note added 2010. not sure why but my 2010 hunch is that the above message was left by members of the I.R.A. stirring it up !]
