Nationalist 11th September, 1920 Meeting of Deputy-Lieutenants and Magistrates in Carlow. Control of Internal Government. A meeting of Deputy Lieutenants and magistrates of the County Carlow was held on Friday evening, Lord Rathdonnell presiding, for the purpose of urging on the Government the necessity of an immediate settlement of the Irish question. The following resolution, proposed by Mr. Henry Bruen, and seconded by Mr. D.R. Pack-Beresford, and warmly supported by Right Hon. W. Kavanagh, D.L., was unanimously passed:---------- We, the Deputy Lieutenants and Magistrates of County Carlow, realising that the British Government has failed to secure the observance of law in Ireland, and has lost the confidence of all classes, urge upon His Majesty's Government the desirability of immediately introducing a Bill , the provisions of which should , while preserving our country within the Empire, give the Irish people control of the internal Government of the country including taxation.

I also have read many wills where the Irish clergyman has left his Vestments and monies and books to the church, would this happen now? and please understand it was not a lot of money although 500 pounds would have been a lot in 1858 I guess Cara

Nationalist, January 1921. Result of arbitration dealing with the dispute concerning the "Quaker's Farm" Killeshin. I find that Mr. John Whelan purchased the Quaker's farm bona fide in the open market nearly 20 years ago, and that he had an absolute right to sell same. I Feb. 1919 Mr. Whelan advertised the "Quaker's farm" for sale , Mr. John McDonald offered £7,000 and the lands were sold to him. I find that Mr. Mc Donald is in strict justice entitled to the possession , use and occopation of said lands. Mr. McDonald might have from patriotic or philantropic motives abstained from purchasing the farm, and the people of Killeshin might have acquired these lands in that case. (signed) Patrick J.Meehan.
I was in a religious order but we weren't allowed to own ANYTHING because of our vow of poverty. We never said "my" shoes etc because they were only "to my use". Don't know if it's still the same, guess it would be. Also, Diocesan priests are often called Secular priests as they do not belong to a religious order (sanctioned by the Pope). Because they do not take vows of poverty, they may own assets as any other citizen. Additional monies they may possess (over and above meager Church salaries) quite often come from their families or from their personal investments. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Cara_Links" <Cara_Links@bigpond.com> To: <irl-carlow@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, March 06, 2010 5:46 PM Subject: Re: [IRL-CARLOW] Fast and Abstinence !. > 1.Diocesan priests - Diocesan priests commit their lives to serving the > people of a diocese, which is a church administrative region, and > typically > work in parishes, schools, or other Catholic institutions as assigned by > the > bishop of their diocese. 8th day of May 1818. William Shepard Copnagh, Carlow swears before William Carter that Robert Shepard, late of Tobinstown, Carlow , has left for America and left William with the Lands and Dwelling House at Tobinstown and Knocknigan and movable property consisting of a quantity of Potatoes, Pigs, Timber and other articles. William requests of Magistrate William Carter that he provide protection by the Barony Constables to assist him as he believes that "his life is in danger as John Moore of Paulville, Gentleman, well armed and in a most menacing and threatening manner, has removed upwards of twenty barrels of Potatoes, a door and door case torn out of the Dwelling House and a Gate taken off the Hinges" and is claiming the remainder.
