    3. Father James Conran was Parish Priest in Ballon 1802 -1825. Prior to that he was P.P. in Rosenallis, Queen's County (Co. Laois). Following the death of Bishop Corcoran in 1819, James was appointed Vicar-Capitular of the Diocese of Kildare and Leighlin. 1. [IRL-CARLOW] Great War..welfare of ex-soldiers, May 1919.
    2. michael purcell
    3. To the Editor Carlow Sentinel. Lisnavagh, Rathvilly, Co. Carlow, May, 1919. Dear Sir--- I have received, as His Majesty's Lieutenant of the County, an urgent appeal from the Minister of Pensions, Chairman of the Trustees of the King's Fund for the re-establishing of disabled officers and men in civil life. Having regard to the strong claims which the disabled have on the support of every one of us, I have decided to open a County Subscription. The amount asked for is £3,000,000, and His Majesty the King has been graciously pleased to head the list of subscribers with the magnificent sum of £78,000. The fund will in no way interfere with State Grants, but will touch those cases which cannot be dealt with by any hard and fast rule which of necessity must be laid down when dealing with public money. No particular part of the Fund is being allocated to a particular County or District. Every disabled man, in whatever part of the Kingdom he resides, has a right to a grant from the Fund on proving his case. I would specially ask that intended subscriptions be sent to me, and not direct to the Fund, as I understand that there will be considerable rivalry among the Counties, and we shall naturally desire to stand high in the list of county subscriptions. The Committee of the County Red Cross Branch has agreed to allocate the sum of £180 out of their surplus funds to the above object, and I propose myself to contribute £25. I hope all subscriptions may be sent to me before the 15th of June. ---- Yours faithfully, RATHDONNELL, H.M.L., Co. Carlow. P.S.---Already a considerable sum from the King's Fund has been expended in this County through the War Pensions Committee.

    3. Karen [Conderan], I believe that a Rev. James Conran once owned land in the area of Ballon as a "Rev. James Couran" (my transcription) is referenced in an 1832 will for a Thomas Nowlan of Ballon who had a leasehold on lands and premises managed by "the Representatives of the late Rev. James Couran". Regards, Roger Nowlan PS#1: Mike Purcell of the list suggested that what I transcribed as Couran was likely Conran. 3. In the PPP Cathedral lists, I would be grateful if you notice any LARGE listings, particularly LARGE/KAVANAGH. I found the charges for the "churchings" interesting. I guess they charged for everything. I remember in the 1960's watching women get "churched" after Sunday Mass. I assume the practice was derived from the Jewish practice of women going to the mikveh (synagogue bath) after childbirth. Deb DEBORAH LARGE FOX Read my blog for Irish research tips: "Help! 3. Hi Tom, Myn Sheil relatives had the same situation. James Sheil married Catherine Walsh @1865. he was protestant and she was Catholic. Their solutyon was to raise their four sons Protestant after the father's religion ,and the one daughter, my grandmother, Catholic after her mother's religion. TJames and Catherine also are buried in two separate cemeteries...apparently neither converted to the other's religion. Kind of sad to think of being buried separately. ----- Original Message ----- From: Tom LaPorte To: irl-carlow@rootsweb.com Sent: Saturday, March 27, 2010 6:57 PM Subject: Re: [IRL-CARLOW] Bowles Hi Mick and list This one may be a mixed marriage. Also, Robert was raised Catholic but later married a Quaker, Anne Waring, the widow of Thomas Baker of Ballickmoyler. 3. Carlow Cathedral Register. 26th September 1778. Churched Mr. Gurley's Milk Woman, 2 shillings and 2pence -offering 4 shillings and 8 pence =Total 6 shillings and 10 pence. ( Note added in 2010. "Churched" was a form of purification ceremony that mothers were to have offered shortly after birth of a baby. This was a practice continued in the R.C. church up to 1970s or 80s. There are many entries in this register for "a Purification" the charge was one shilling and one penny ----one entry reads ; 21st November 1778, " for an Unction and Purification" two shillings and two pence" ===( combined charge for both services, obviously the mother was in danger of death , no mention of a baptism which may indicate that the baby had died ! ). 5th September, 1780. for a Baptism in Leigh and Unctions, 4 shillings and 4 pence, ( may be a case of both mother and baby are in danger of death, the priest first baptises the baby and then administers Extreme Unction to both of them ) Total figures for October 1778. Baptisms and Unctions 2 pounds / 2 shilling. Marriages; 5 shillings and 5 pence. Total ; 2 pounds 7 shillings. 5 pence. For my payment ; 11 shillings and 9 pence. For Mr. Gernon ; 1 pound, 15 shillings and 4 pence. ( Mr. Gernon was the Parish Priest for Carlow, Graigue, and Killeshin, not sure if the Baptisms / Marriages records were entered by a housekeeper or a clerk, but it appears the Mr Gernon did not enter any of them from 1777 to 1782.)

    3. I think their treatment by their families might have been even sadder. I know of two brother's lines, one Protestant and one who married a Catholic and raised the children Catholic, who emigrated to Canada the same year and to this day the two families refuse to admit that there is any connection to each other. That must have been how they felt when they arrived and it never changed. Also, the Catholic branch prospered in Canada and the Protestant family ended up losing their farms, going out west to settle and then losing everything out there. Now both look down on the other one and my documentation that their ancestors were brothers was never acknowledged by either family. Now that's sad. -----Original Message----- From: irl-carlow-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:irl-carlow-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Maribeth Nolan Sent: 27 March 2010 16:13 To: irl-carlow@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [IRL-CARLOW] Bowles Importance: High Hi Tom, Myn Sheil relatives had the same situation.
