    1. [IRL-CARLOW] Home Rulers and Sinn Feiners welcome.

    3. [ War of Independence 1919 - 1922.] Comrades of the Great War Club. Minute Book 8th May 1919. First General Meeting held in Deighton Hall, Burrin Street, Carlow. Chairman; Rev Ridgeway. The meeting was addressed by the President of the Comrades Club , Lieut-Colonel Robert Browne-Clayton, D.S.O. He stated that since the last meeting in January, 249 ex-servicemen had enrolled in the club, with membership coming along in leaps and bounds :--- " the cry is "still they come, still they come" and all are welcome. The Club rooms in Burrin Street are fully equipped as a recreation centre, with books and newspapers available, a licensed canteen is in full swing with prices to suit the pocket of the men that frequent the premises. Rules and Regulations have been adopted and subscription of 6 pence weekly has been suggested, The principle object was to keep together those who took part in the Great War, to influence the Government and to have the men taught suitable trades to obtain employment for them. Membership Cards are now being distributed and if any man presents himself with his Membership Card at any of the 800 Branches in Great Britain or Ireland or any of the Branches throughout the world, he will be made welcome. It is now possible for any member to leave Carlow and to go to Australia, New Zealand, Canada, South Africa, where he will find a friend in the Comrades Club." The Chairman, Rev. Ridgeway, stated their first business was to enlarge the Carlow Post to a Branch as membership had now exceeded 100. He proposed a resolution to that effect. Rev Ridgeway said a letter had been put into his hands complaining that a man had been black-beaned from becoming a member of the Club because he was a member of SInn Fein, but there was no reason why he should not be admitted as a member of the Club, as there were no political or religious differences in the Club, and they might rest assured that the man in question would be elected a member of the Comrades of the Great War Club. In future no man's politics should be mentioned at any meeting of the Committee for election, the only qualification being that he fought in the Great War. Mr. Webster added that it was not necessary even that he should be a soldier, sailor, or airman in His Majesty's forces. Men serving in the Mercantile Marine during the war and who had run risks, were also eligible to join. The qualification was that a man had served His Majesty during the war. Home Rulers or Sinn Feiners were eligible. There was loud cheering and applause following Mr. Webster's contribution. Mr. Webster congratulated the Club and stated that it compared favourably with the best of the Clubs in Ireland. On a show of hands, those present were in favour of forming a Benefit Society. Rev. Ridgeway said that they should make enquiries about benefit funds and would consider the matter at a future meeting. In conclusion the President said there were troublesome times ahead and all members should work harmoniously together and with the man who stayed at home during the war. He urged all those present to be available to take part in the Victory Day ceremonies in July. Circulars would be distributed directing the men where to assemble on the day. . The meeting then concluded with the singing of the National Anthem and three rousing cheers for the King.

    3. Anna, to add to the confusion I have to say that is a mistake many people make ......where you place Castle Hill is actually Castle Street...Castle Hill is down at the Castle on the street where the Boot Factory was, it runs from John Street junction to Governey Square and is about a 5 minute walk from where the Bowls family lived on Dublin Road.!.....Kennedy Street was formerly Coal Market. Anna, Alan has already commenced transcribing the photocopies , when he has the content typed up you should be able to gain some information from the results.... 1. Re: [IRL-CARLOW] Bowels----
    2. castle hill is as it states - a hill - it is a street in carlow town and the bulk of that street is taken up with the high wall of st. mary's church of ireland church. the bottom of castle hill runs into kennedy street and the top of it meets with dublin street - not to be confused with dublin road which started at the court house after the shopping area. so there is a dublin st. and a dublin road which may cause considerable confusion for people not familiar with carlow town. also kennedy st. was named after president kennedy and therefore is relatively "new" - cannot remember what it was called before that and cannot look it up as the map is at home in carlow and i am in my london house. sorry. hope this explains a lot or has some meaning for some people. 3. Hi Mick Thanks very much for those. All of those entries are for the same family, William Bowles married to Anne Byrne and their children. Except one: James Bowels, Father William, Mother Eliza Smith, Castle Hill.Bapt. 17th July 1831.Sponsors; William Smith, Bridget Hogan. I'm pretty sure I asked you this before but I can't remember for sure now. Would Castle Hill be an area rather than a street? William lived on Dublin Road a long block behind the Court House. Almost to the Convent if that is still there. Would that area be called Castle Hill? This is probably the same William Bowles in a previous marriage (wife was Eliza Smith in 1831 but Anne Byrne from 1836 to 1845) but if Castle Hill would not refer to that stretch of Dublin Road then I can't be sure. He was on Dublin Road in 1835, 1837, 1844, 1851 and 1863. One William Bowles entry for 1841 gives his home as Quarries. Again is that a term for an area which would include his house on Dublin Road? One entry for 1837 gives William's home as Barnard's Lane. His house on Dublin Road was 6 houses from the corner of Barnard's Lane so I'm thinking they weren't too careful with what term they used for their home. Or maybe he moved all over the place in the same couple of blocks every year or two. 3. The Carlow Cathedral Registers dating from 1811 to 1820 for St. Mary's Parish, are missing. I was told by the Cathedral sacristan that Father Peader McSwayne (Peadar Mac Suibhne) borrowed them many years ago , they have not been seen since. In the 1980s we undertook a through search of the Library in St. Patrick's College but there was no sign of them. They were not available to be microfilmed in the 1950s. 2. Roger Nowlan
    3. Ron I saw your posting on the Carlow list indicating that you were searching for information on the "Lannin" family name or any of its variants. For my part, I recall seeing a Lennon tombstone in the old Ballon cemetery behind the RC church (Sts. Peter and Paul). Unfortunately I didn't take a picture at the time but do recall it because of making an association with the Beatles' John Lennon. I also recall that it was close to the back of the church and that one of the neighbouring tombstones dated back to 1811. I also note that there is a Patrick Lennon mentioned in Griffiths Valuation of 1851/52 for Oldtown, Ballyellin, Co. Carlow. Bye for now and good luck with your search, Roger Nowlan On Sun, Mar 28, 2010 at 9:52 PM, Ron Lanning <ron@ykk.co.nz> wrote: > Hi Hoping when you get a chance you may be able to see if there is any > mention of the Family Name " Lannin " or variants e.g L*NN*N would be > probably 1800-1811 , my GGGrandfather , Nathaniel , was Born circa > 1818-1819 > , but maybe one of his siblings may have been Born earlier . > > Thanks for any Help . > > Regards > Ron Lanning >

    1. [IRL-CARLOW] photocopies of church registers.
    2. michael purcell
    3. Alan McGrath lives in Carlow town, he has agreed to type up the photocopies of the Carlow town registers 1769--1811. Copied in 1969 by Pat Purcell, the photocopies form a complete record of the orinigal registers. The registers of the time included entries for Graigue and Kellishin ( up to circa 1820, Carlow / Graige / Killeshin formed the one Parish---St. Marys). Alan is a 60wpm typer (I remain a one-finger typist !) so it should not be long before Alan is able to submit the results to Michael Brennan to share with you all. I will be asking Michael for advice on how we should proceed. In the meantime "stayed tuned to this channel for breaking-genealogy-news" !, mick
