    3. War of Independence Jan 1919--July 1922. [Note added 2010. One of the men in Belfast prison at this time was Seamus Lennon, T.D.E. from Carlow, a Sinn Feiner, he was elected to the First Dail as representative for Carlow in 1918. Patrick Gaffney, a brother of William Gaffney, secretary to the Graiguecullen Sinn Fein Club, was in jail in England. The Hunting / Racing debate could be regarded as an early battle for "hearts and minds". ] Nationalist, May 1919. Letter to the Editor. Straw Hall, Carlow, April 15th 1919. Carlow Hunt Sportman's Races. Sir:--It has been found necessary with great regret to abandon the races planned for Easter Monday. Politics were brought in as a condition to the holding of the meeting therefore no other course was open to the Committee ---Yours faithfully, H.Herring-Cooper, Hon. Sec. Reply to above letter. Nationalist, May 1919. Graiguecullen Sinn Fein Club. 25th April, 1919. Sir:--- We leave it to your readers to determine the truth or accuracy of the statement of the Carlow Hunt Race Committee. They were not asked to interfere in a political matter. They were asked merely on purely humanitarian grounds to protest against the brutal treatment that at present is being given to certain young Irishmen in Irish and British jails. They were not asked to protest against the imprisonment of these men, but against the present conditions of their imprisonment which were equalled only in the worst days of the slave trade. The members of the Hunt Committee dismiss all this as politics. They would be pleased to have their day's sport on the lands of the men whose own relative is one of the suffering in Belfast Jail --- sportsmen indeed !. Further, they were asked to protest against the gross breach of faith perpetrated by the English Chief Secretary for Ireland against the Bishop of Down and Connor and the Lord Mayor of Dublin in the matter of the prisoners' treatment. But again sportsmen have no concern with breaches of faith, even in a matter where not merely human dignity but human life is at stake. These sportsmen are raising the cry on many sides that Ireland will suffer grave financial loss by the stoppage of hunting. Are these sportsmen, superior as they are to human suffering and public fair dealing, so brainless and so dead to all feeling human as well as national, as not to realise that we value the life and health of our fellow-countrymen and value our national rights at a figure to which their horse trade could never attain. These sportsmen should first try to be men, then Irishmen, and then true sportsmen. Yours truly, P.Whitney, William Gaffney, Sec.

    2. Thank you for posting this, Treacy: Not sure if there is a connection between one of my John Bulgers and the one listed below , as I have no record of an Ellen anywhere.  I will try to do some further digging, but I do know my Bulgers hailed from Carlow, and the timeframe for my gg uncle fits. I know there was another John Bulger wreaking havoc all over Philadelphia at this time (at least according to newspaper accounts and his eventual incarceration).  If this is him Ellen was in for quite an interesting time with her brother . . .  Happy Easter, Bethanne ----- Original Message ----- From: "Treacy Breen" <tab1310@hotmail.co.uk> To: irl-carlow@rootsweb.com Sent: Friday, April 2, 2010 5:28:26 PM GMT -05:00 US/Canada Eastern Subject: [IRL-CARLOW] Philadelphia Passenger List - Records Philadelphia Passenger List S.S. 2. JJ Woods
    3. Hi all, This link may be of interest to some of you. http://www.tcd.ie/history/1641/ The following is a short extract of the 'blurb' on the site: *The Research Resource* The three-year project aims to transcribe and digitise the Depositions comprising 3,400 depositions, examinations and associated materials, located in the Library of Trinity College Dublin, in which Protestant men and women of all classes told of their experiences following the outbreak of the rebellion by the Catholic Irish in October, 1641. Collected by government-appointed commissioners, the witness testimony runs to approximately 19,000 pages, and constitutes the chief evidence for the sharply contested allegation that the rebellion began with a general massacre of protestant settlers. As a result, this material has been central to a protracted and bitter historical dispute. Propagandists, politicians and historians have all exploited the depositions at different times, and the controversy surrounding them has never been satisfactorily resolved. In fact, the 1641 ‘massacres’, like King William’s victory at the Boyne (1690), and the battle of the Somme (1916), have played a key role in creating and sustaining a collective Protestant/British identity in the province of Ulster. Regards and happy Easter to all, J. J.

    3. Anything known of the earlier history of the CROSTHWAITE family of Co Carlow? Samuel Crosthwaite was a large scale miller at BAGENALSTOWN around the 1820s to 1840s, possibly longer. His address in Pigot's 1824 Provincial Directory for Leighlinbridge gives an address for (probably) him at Lodge Mills. There were also Crosthwaites not far away, farming near ATHY in Co Kildare, one of whose sons, John, was the Dublin clock maker; a John Crosthwaite in LAOIS (Queen's Co) married to an Elizabeth with a son Samuel born c.1838; a Leland Crosthwaite with mills just outside Dublin at LEIXLIP, Co Kildare, a son of whom probably was Thomas Crosthwaite, a governor of the Bank of Ireland, and Leland Crosthwaite of Clontarf. Are all or some of these families connected? Bill.

    2. Yes, thanks to those who read and transcribe all these old records with the faded, hard to read handwriting! Were you able to scan records to assist you in your endeavors? I would think that including the Sponsors is of benefit also, since they were often relatives. Sometimes this has helped me in doing my own research, sometimes it creates another question. I still have some of those sponsor mysteries to solve. Maybe someday I will figure them out. Great work! I advised Alan not to include  the Sponsors, as I thought it would be too much work for him,  but I can see that he has done so, this greatly enriches the content for researchers. This work is all the more important at present as the original Registers are no longer available for viewing by researchers. Thank you Alan and Michael and Also Thanks to Cara in Tasmania for typing up the Rathvilly registers. 3. I have meant to respond to Michael Brennan's posting made on 23 Feb...but life gets busy. I'm sure it was in response to a post I made on 7 Feb viz: My great, great grandmother was *Sarah Eliza Douglas,* born about 1822 in Carlow, Her father was *Marlborough Douglas*, and mother was *Sarah Rowe*. My great, great grandfather was *Thomas Trueman*. He was born in Carlow about 1820. I have no other information about him. They were married in Carlow about 1847. It seems probable that they arrived in Australia in May 1853 on board the "Marco Polo" which sailed from Liverpool UK. The name Marlborough is an unusual first name, and the name Douglas does not seem to be very common in Ireland. It seems likely that the name Marlborough is one that the family might re-use over many generations. I'd like to find out more information about the connections and other information relating to *Douglas family* *Trueman family* *Rowe family* in the early 1800's and before - or since - in Carlow or other parts of Ireland. Any ideas of how, when and why the Trueman family and Douglas family came to Ireland from the UK would be welcome Chris Trueman" I had previously read about Marlborough Clark Douglas. Marlborough is an unusual name so I made the reasonable assumption that Marlborough Clark Douglas is almost certainly named after an earlier ancestor called Marlborough Douglas who may have died about 1826 - who is the one I am trying to trace. His wife is recorded as being Sarah Rowe. One of their children was Sarah Eliza Douglas born about 1822. Since Marlborough Clark Douglas was apparently a historian, and his papers passed to Pat Purcell, there may be a good chance that his papers contained information about his own family history. If so, that would be very useful to obtain. Any ideas? michael purcell wrote: > someone recently enquired about Marlborough Clarke Douglas, he was a member > of the Methodist community > in Carlow. > A plaque is erected to his memory on a wall inside the church on the Athy > Road. > He wrote a history of Carlow. > Pat Purcell inherited his research papers in 1924. > Marlborough wrote : > The precise interpretation of Catherlough (Carlow) raises the hackles among > otherwise amenable historians.
