Hello Kate, Thanks for writing in regard to the name Onaghan. That is how I found the surname "HOLOHAN" spelt in the Dunleckney baptisms. I've found it spelt many different ways but this was a new one. I would possibly have missed the entries if I hadn't spotted the wife's name....Anne Derenzy....spelt as Anne Darenzy in these entries. I knew it had to be the couple I was searching for. Isn't it strange how the spellings would be so different depending on who was writing things down. Wonder what the first name is for the fellow who went to Chicago? I know my Great-Grandfather had a number of brothers and as it was the time around the famine.....it wouldn't surprise me if one or more of them went to America. There were two Michael's born into this family...and a David, John and James as well. All the best, Pat in NJ ----- Original Message ----- From: <Kate_Miller@ilnd.uscourts.gov> To: <irl-carlow@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, April 16, 2010 11:02 AM Subject: [IRL-CARLOW] Onaghan > Pat, > > FYI -- I'm always looking at an Onaghan/Nolan couple from Carlow who came > to Chicago as possibly connected to my Nolans from Myshall. Paper found in Ballon R.C. Register . Jacob Nowlan of Ravidon in the Parish of Wells, Barny of Idrone West, Carlow states that a servant maid named Margaret Haw lived in his house and in his employment in the Year 1840 as he believes between August and Christmas in said year. She served in his employment for about three months. during the said period a servant man named Hugh Neill, now present, also lived in his house, during that period no other servant man or labouring man lived in his house. Hugh Neill aforesaid is from the neighbourhood of Ballon in this county. He has since that time heard that the said Margaret Haw was delivered of a child and that he heard it was rumoured that Hugh Neill, now present, was the father of said child. Sworn before Hugh Faulkner at Ravindon, 24th November, 1841. (signed) Jacob Nowlan. Hugh Faulkner.
Recently Terry Curran has been very busy searching through some old American newspapers (On-Line) and found a large amount of information about Carlow activities between 1900 and 1910 which you can read at your leisure here: http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~irlcar2/carlow_1900.htm Each year has its own page (11 pages). http://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/search/pages/ Regard Michael Brennan Carlow Website: http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~irlcar2/ My Laois Page: http://freepages.family.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mjbrennan/index.htm

Hello Brian and the List, I just came across a family member in the Dunleckney Baptisms for 1843. It is showing ? for the first name.....wonder if you would most kindly check it again and see if you can make anything out. 16 July 1843.......? Onaghan...........James Onaghan and Ann Darenzy.....sponsors..John Doyle and Mary Quigley.........other child...24 Apr 1841. This is my James Holohan and Ann Derenzy (with many, many variants) Hoping you can 'have another go at' the first name of this baby. Any help will be appreciated very much. Many Thanks and Best regards, Pat Zipf
Pat - I have to tell you that when there is a question mark or an illegible mark it usually means I have done the best I could. In most cases where the film is obscured I enlarge it, photocopy it, and then take it home where I tape the photocopies together and then connect the dots with pentel pen. I am aware that you follow my work because you have been so kind to thank me in the past. So I will try again next time I go to the FHC, but I am not optimistic. You may be able to deduce the child's name by checking with familysearchlabs.com, etc. brian --- On Thu, 4/15/10, Pat Zipf <patzipf@verizon.net> wrote: From: Pat Zipf <patzipf@verizon.net> Subject: [IRL-CARLOW] BRian Walsh - request for recheck To: irl-carlow@rootsweb.com Date: Thursday, April 15, 2010, 6:46 PM Hello Brian and the List, I just came across a family member in the Dunleckney Baptisms for 1843. Deborah, My great-grandfather, Matthew JOYCE (b. 1807, s/o Patrick JOYCE and Nancy CLOVEN) married 1st in 1828 to Mary DALTON who died in 1847; married 2nd in 1848 to Mary FARRELL. They had two children in Ballyroughan, Borris Parish, County Carlow in 1849 and 1850, and then immigrated to USA in 1852. The next child was born in Rochester, NY in 1853. By 1854, the family had settled in Kewanee, Henry Co., IL where the 3 youngest children were born. Twenty years later, they moved to Maryville, Nodaway Co., MO where they lived until January 1899 when both Matthew and Mary died. Do you see any possible connections? Betty

Thanks Michael I was concerned because I had come across references to St Mary's and assumed it was C of I. As a matter of interest was the old church in the 1700s a Cathedral ? I assume the Cathedral at Old Leilghlin was the bishops seat before the reformation. Regards PP
Good point...I attempted to explain this at the outset of the Transcribing project....but today the Registers are referred to as Carlow Cathedral Registers and are so named on the spine in Gold Leaf. To avoid confusion it may be best keep that title combined with Roman Catholic, although I prefer to call them Carlow Town R.C. Registers. Well done to Alan, Michael Purcell & Michael Brennan however I think the heading should explain that the Church was named St. Mary's at that time and we should also indicate that these are Roman Catholic and not Anglican Baptisms & Marriages. Thus avoiding confusion with St Marys C of I records. The use of the name St Mary's was changed after 1950 ( the date on the statue over the Cathedral door) as.... "On November 1, 1950, the Feast of All Saints, Pope Pius XII declared as a dogma revealed by God that "Mary, the immaculate perpetually Virgin Mother of God, after the completion of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul into the glory of Heaven". Can anyone confirm this ? Well done Alan , a great job...I have noticed that you have entered "at McGernons" in 1779 Transcripts, I believe that should read "at Mr Gernons" he was Parish Priest at the time ...easy to mistake as the entries are not very readable, he appears to have left the job of recording many of the marriages and baptisms in the Register to his housekeeper or assistant, who had atrocious handwriting and recording methods but could certainly keep a tot on the figures....
