Sue, At my website (http://nolanfamilies.org) in the Family Stories section I have a "story" relating to the Michael Nolan of Madison, Wisconsin, mentioned in your Email. Here is what I have: "1864 : Madison, WI -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- [171] Michael Nolan (c1838- ????) - from Co. Carlow?, IE [172] unknown (???? - ????) - from Unknown Children: Henry T. (c1886) and Elizabeth (c1898), both born in Wisconsin According to the 1910 US census Michael immigrated in 1864 and married in the US since, in the 1880 census for Madison, he is listed as single working as a farmhand for Edward G. Hayden. Michael had at least two children, Henry T. and Elizabeth, as listed in the 1910 census and, by then, his wife had died. According to 1902 and 1905 immigration records for a Joseph Aghney, Michael was an uncle to Joseph and Thomas Aughney, the latter living on Monmouth St. in New Jersey. In 1905, Joseph's last residence had been Tullow in Co. Carlow, Ireland. >From the foregoing I see that you might want to pick up the Aughney trail in Tullow, Co. Carlow (according to 1905 record) and in the US in New Jersey (Monmouth Street). Hi Tom many thanks I would think its a great idea, (awaiting Michael's approval) if anything the National Archives could benifit from it, in some ways, I have one I could send in as well as a Royal Navy Record, more we have, the more examples of the infomation that can be obtain from these records that could help Carlow researchers. all the best Terry --- El lun, 10/5/10, Tom LaPorte <tlaporte@mts.net> escribió: De: Tom LaPorte <tlaporte@mts.net> Asunto: Re: [IRL-CARLOW] Royal Hospital Chelsea Soldiers Service records Para: irl-carlow@rootsweb.com Fecha: lunes, 10 de mayo, 2010 04:16 Hi Michael Thanks Terry. I have copies of the four documents for John Boels of Carlow which are listed on this page. Others may have others of these documents and perhaps some members will order copies now that they've seen the list online. I doubt very much these documents are copyrighted and the National Archives doesn't usually care if the copies they provide are published as long as they're not used for profit. Would we consider including links to the original document for the ones in that list that we have? It might help other people out so they don't order the same copy again and it would make interesting reading for anyone. I would be glad to make scanned images of mine available. As an example of why its worth checking these pension documents, this is what I found out from the John Boels discharge papers: John Bowles, Private, 5 foot, 5 ¾ inches tall, fair hair, blue eyes, fair complexion, by trade a labourer, born Carlow. He first enlisted in the 83 Foot Regiment on July 26, 1808 at age 19 and served for 4 years and 276 days until he was discharged at Danbury on April 28, 1813 due to a fractured right leg and is considered unfit for further service. A separate note added to the paper states that he fractured his leg by a fall from a horse while on furlough. He was on pension from Apr. 29, 1813 to Oct. 2, 1815 when he enlisted in the 2nd Royal Veterans Battery in which he served for 128 days until he was discharged at Harwich barracks Jan. 31, 1816. This added 3 pence per year to his pension. After discharge he was to reside in Leicester. On Aug. 25, 1819 in Cork he enlisted in the 4th Royal Veterans as a Drummer and served until Nov. 25, 1820. On the same day as his discharge he was paid 1 pound, 13 shillings and 7 pence for a 31 day march from Ayr in North Britain to Leicester. If the details about his life were not interesting enough, the fact that he ended up in Leicester after his service could lead to a whole new profitable line of research. Tom

Ever since visiting Carlow two years ago, I have kept up with news around the County online, especially in Clonmore where my ggg.grandfather James MOORE was a tenant farmer in the 1850's. I have been away for a few weeks and when checking the website today found that it has now changed to subscription only access. What a disappointment! I enjoyed reading about the village news. Would anyone know what has happened to the property 'Coolalaw House' which, when we visited Clonmore was closed and barred. I since discovered that the owner had died, so presumably the property would have been taken over by family, or sold. Any thoughts (offline) of where I might find any information about this property? Cheers!........Judy. Perth. W.Australia
Thank you to those who offered advice on the Corrigan family research - Richard Corrigan of Rathvilly is our cousin and we have visited him in Ireland on several occasions over quite a few years now and feel we have already exhausted our knowledge of this family by sharing all the information we each already had. From his army records held at Kew UK James was aged 22 years in 1811 and his father's name is given as John.? Further research has led us to suspect James' mother may have been a Miss Bradley? James had two brothers at least that we know of - William who married 1817 to Anne Brownrigg and John who married 1821 to Charlotte Downes.? Both James and William were officers in the East York Militia and John was an officer in the 3rd Buffs. We believe James at least was born in Co Carlow and one of his children in later years in Australia gave Mildred Co Carlow as his own birthplace. Hi Sharon, Well, I live in OR...so we are practically neighbors. I have some family roots counties adjacent to Carbon County, PA, so I like to get an idea of what various places have on hand. I have never been to Jim Thorpe, PA - about as close to there as I have ever wandered is Stroudsburg. I get back to Philly with some regularity as my husband and I have family there. Thanks. Hi Joann, All of the info that I have came from a cousin who I have not been in contact with for a number of years. She did an absolutely fabulous job of researching the Corrigans in Hazleton, PA and spent years doing it, long before the advent of personal computers. She kindly sent me a copy of her work several years ago. She mentions Mauch Chunk some, but more as a place where various people lived - not as a place with an historical society where research could be done. She did mention a Corrigan showing up in the 1859 census of Mauch Chunk as possibly being related to this group. I posted an excerpt from her research, including the reference to the Mauch Chunk Corrigan, just a few hours ago in response to Barbara's inquiry about any Australian connections, but I don't think it has shown up on the list. I included an attachment and I don't know if that works with the list (I am very technically challenged). I realize that I have never seen anything posted to the list before that had an attachment. I sent a personal forward of the info on to Barbara, as she was particularly interested in any Australian connections. Also, I live in Seattle and have only ever been to PA once about 34 years ago (Philadelphia), so have no access to or knowledge of the records available in Mauch Chunk. Wish I could help more. James Corrigan (1789-1860) and his wife Alice Tomlinson (1793-1872) were married 1815 at the church Aghade Leighlinbridge Co Carlow and their marriage certificate states they were both from the parish of Ballon. Their first child Alicia Corrigan was christened at the same church in 1816 and I understand they were possibly living in Dublin from that time. I would like to know if anyone else is researching this family as I would like to be able to progress further back with James & Alice's parents. From his army records held at Kew UK James was aged 22 years in 1811 and his father's name is given as John. Further research has led us to suspect James' mother may have been a Miss Bradley. James had two brothers at least that we know of - William who married 1817 to Anne Brownrigg and John who married 1821 to Charlotte Downes. Both James and William were officers in the East York Militia and John was an officer in the 3rd Buffs. We believe James at least was born in Co Carlow and one of his children in later years in Australia gave Mildred Co Carlow as his own birthplace. Very happy to hear from anyone who may be able to offer some more information about any of the people mentioned in this message or this family. Barbara Corrigan (Canberra ACT, Australia).
