I thought St Dymphna was patroness of cancer patients....I'm wrong.....she's patroness of those with mental conditions and nervous disorders. Evidently she was martyred by her father by whatever reason. Suitable name for a hospital of that kind. one of the most common reasons for being there (for women) was to have a baby out of marriage - also there were other physical conditions that put people there - for example thyroid problems like hypothyroidism and mixodema - nowadays fixed so easily with medication. another example is epilepsy - now treated with medication also. ----- Original Message ----- From: "JJ Woods" <woodsjj@gmail.com> To: irl-carlow@rootsweb.com Sent: Sunday, 13 June, 2010 17:20:34 GMT +00:00 GMT Britain, Ireland, Portugal Subject: Re: [IRL-CARLOW] Carlow lunatic Asylum-DEATHS If he was alive and in the hospital between those dates then it is likely he would appear in the 1901 census just released on-line on the national archives site. for anyone looking for records of "the lunatic ayslum" in carlow you can always write to Mrs Eileen McGill who is the "keeper" of such records in what is now called St. Dympna's hospital. i do not know how far back the records go or how well kept they are - but with the freedom of information act it is quite possible that you are entitled to some information. i hope this is helpful and sorry eileen if this instigates a flood of letters! ----- Original Message ----- From: "frances heidel" <fradel@comcast.net> To: irl-carlow@rootsweb.com Sent: Sunday, 13 June, 2010 18:17:58 GMT +00:00 GMT Britain, Ireland, Portugal Subject: Re: [IRL-CARLOW] Carlow lunatic Asylum Didn't they institutionalize people for being more than heavy drinkers?? i wonder if they ever came to the realization that once the drinking stopped, they were perfectly normal and didn't need the institutionalization. I know for a fact that Denis was a first name used in the Ballon area as far back as the late 1700s (e.g. one "Denys Nowlan" aged 16 died in 1777 and is buried in the Templepeter cemetery0. I also know for a fact that the "Michael Nolan" of Cunnaberry who died in 2002 in his late 80s had 6 or 7 Denis' in a row in his ancestry. All this to say that the first name Denis seems to have been prevalent in the Ballon area. I also note that there was Thomas Clear from the Ballon area married a Mary Ann Nowlan in the early 1800s. (NOTE: I believe that Cleary & Clear are vaiations on the original surname De Clare) Here is what I have the above -mentioned Thomas Clear: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1831 : Kilconnor, Co. Carlow, IE -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- [175] Mary Nowlan (???? - ????) - from Ireland [176] Thomas Clear (???? - ????) - from Ireland Children: Johanna (c1831), possibly others More on Thomas Clear and children: Children of MARY NOWLAN and THOMAS CLEAR: Johanna (c1831) of Kilconnor m. John KELLY (c1831-1875) of Killane in St. Andrews RC Church, Bagenalstown, Co. Carlow, on July 01, 1858; they emigrated to Canada between 1869 and 1871 and settled in Farrelton, Quebec, located along the Gatineau river. This was at a time when the Gatineau river was used for logging emptying into the Ottawa river at Ottawa. Johanna died in East Templeton (now Gatineau, QC) located at the mouth of the Gatineau river. ... ****************** "Peter" was also a first name for Nolan found in the Ballon area. My own ancestor was a Peter Nowland born near Ballon around 1796. My Peter was the son of a James Nowlan married to Mary Clowry (nee Shortall) and James Nowlan seems to have had a brother named Michael married to an Anne Brennan who also named a son Peter in 1793. The latter also had a daughter named Catherine in 1794. Both Peter and Catherine were baptized in the Ballon church. I haven't found about him I should imagine he is a relative. Germaine x Hi! Nothing much to add except to say that I believe that the "Mr. Nowland the priest" mentioned below was likely the Reverend Doctor Nicholas Nowland who was leasing a large piece of land from the Leckys in the Ballon area in 1787 and was also the Parish Priest of Ballon in the 1780s. Regards, Roger Nowlan Good evening all, With thanks to Mick Purcell I have managed to trace a line in my family tree to the late 1700's to two brothers; John Dear and Thomas Dear, the latter from which I descend and who married a Judith Dunne. I imagine the brothers were born c1775 or earlier. Information I have to date (Source: Carlow Heritage Society/Clayton-Browne Papers/Mick Purcell): There is a Judith Dunne listed at Raheenwood, Old Leighlin, in Griffith's Valuations 1852 as renting 'Houses, and Land' from Anne Vigors and Sisters. Land area listed as follows: A=2 R=1 r=29. Cost of land rent IR£1. House rent is 5 shillings making total, IR£1 and 5 shillings. This may be the same Judith Dunne who married Thomas. If so, he may have passed away by this point, if this was the home that he and his wife settled in. Extract from Browne-Clayton Papers: 'Kallender of Prisoners in Custody Newton, Esquire, High Sheriff of Carlow, 6th day of October 1796. Edward Byrne fined two marks and to give Security to be of the Peace for seven years. John Rourke guilty of assault, fined one mark (13 shillings and 4 pence) and then discharged. Thomas Deer found guilty of two assaults and to be imprisoned for a fortnight, fined six pence.' This also tells us Thomas was a blacksmith. Following the 1798 rebellion men in the area made the statements such as the following made by Thomas (records found in UK by, and held by, Mick Purcell): 'Thomas Deer of Bridewell Lane, Dealer, Sworn by his brother John Deer of Cockpit lane, had a pike and gave to Mr. Nowland the priest and requires a protection.' Thomas's son James raised his own family on Pollerton Road, but I would like to find out where his father Thomas and uncle James were born. I have a feeling it may be Killeshin. I may be wrong. I am at a dead end at this point and so far have been unable to find out who the parents of Thomas and John are. Well in that time frame they will be registered deaths and be at the GRO, and probably in their a lot of others - remember each death had to be registered so whether the person in charge of the institution signed the paper or the coroner or an undertaker they could be located in a burial records in the registers at the GRO. And that didnt matter where they died, be it in a poor house or in a home of some other name, they were registered - not in the beginning mind you but in 1910 -1911 they were fined if they did not do such a thing and if the man died in a Asylum, there were others responsible for his death being registered. Cheers Cara
If he was alive and in the hospital between those dates then it is likely he would appear in the 1901 census just released on-line on the national archives site. J. J. Michelle, From the How-to instructions on searching the 1911 census: Institutions People in institutions like prisons, army and police barracks, asylums and workhouses were often listed in the census only by their initials. Thus, Mary Smith will be listed only as M.S. If you think the person you seek was in an institution in 1911, first try the return for the institution, if you know it, as the ancillary information on the return (age, county of birth, previous occupation etc.) will help you to decide whether this is the right person. If you don't know the institution, or merely suspect that someone might have been in one, use their initials plus the age and sex boxes to narrow it down, eg M S, 25, female. Jack Langton
Didn't they institutionalize people for being more than heavy drinkers?? i wonder if they ever came to the realization that once the drinking stopped, they were perfectly normal and didn't need the institutionalization. God help him, Michelle. In those days if you were acting a little bit differently than others, although sane enough, they'd put you away. The poor man probably didn't put up with anyone's crap (excuse the expression) and they thought he needed to be separated from society. Here in PA in the US, they closed a city-sized mental institution years ago. They must have realized that the majority of the patients did not need to be locked up in an institution. The Statements / Bonds are commitment to appear in open Court to answer charges .. in this case, gentry, magistrate, justice of the peace, Bunbury, Burton, Fishbourne "are at it". Thank you, Mike. I am trying to reconcile the disappearance of my g-g-grandfather after his second marriage in 1881 after the death of his first wife Sarah Jane Lemon in 1875.. I recently received a snippet that the person thought he had died on May 22, 1911 at the asylum. His name was Charles Thomas Farley and he was born in Dublin about 1833-34. I was wondering, if this is him, when he was admitted and why. Any help you could give me would be greatly appreciated Gratefully, Michelle ----- Original Message ----- From: "michael purcell" <carlowmike@gmail.com> To: <irl-carlow@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, June 13, 2010 12:06 AM Subject: Re: [IRL-CARLOW] Carlow lunatic Asylum > it is considered private...but the lists are there ...if you have one name > I > could check for you , mick > > On Sat, Jun 12, 2010 at 9:47 PM, frances heidel <fradel@comcast.net> > wrote: > >> Michelle, Wouldn't that information be held as strictly >> confidential? Thank you for answering Francis, I really don't know about how long the confidentiality would last. I have been trying to locate my gggrandfather for 4 years. He seemed to dropo off the face of the earth after 1882 but just received a snippet of information that the person believed he died at the asylum on May 22, 1911. Would like to vaerify his death some way and also if possible learn when he was admitted and why.
