    1. [IRL-CARLOW] Maps of Barony of Forth
    2. Sharon Oddie Brown
    3. Two questions: Are there on line maps that anyone has found for the Barony of Forth? Secondly, was this Barony known under another name at any time? I am trying to figure out what townland and parish might have been a likely place for a JACKSON who supposedly had lands at Mt. Leinster. There is one possibility in Griffiths in the townland of Craans, Parish of Ardone where a Thomas JACKSON leased from the Representatives of the Rt. Hon John DOHERTY. It was 27 acres and not much to brag about in terms of buildings. 1. [IRL-CARLOW] Boating Trip 1910/12
    2. Michael Brennan
    3. Maribeth Nolan has sent us a fantastic photo of a large group of people (70+) nearly all standing on a Barge. See: Boating Trip (2nd image from the bottom) http://www.igp-web.com/carlow/Graiguecullen_images_2.htm The look on all their faces; not a single smile. Was this just a photo shoot or did they all pile on the boat and go on a trip down the Barrow? 3. Hello, My husband, Dan Duffy, says her name is familiar. He was 1960 grad of Creighton Prep and CU and CU law school in 1966. I went to Duchesne College. My Mercy friends were Mary Ellen Bizzari, Janet Capazo, Mary Ann Cavanaugh and many more. Fun to meet people online. Maybe we're even related! She graduated from Mercy High in 1961, from Creighton U. in 1965, and completed her PhD at Berkeley in 1969. Then she came to work with me on a postdoctoral appointment, but as my friends told me, I found a permanent position for her at the end of 1970, when we were married. So it will be 40 years for us at the end of December. I am retired from UNC (for health reaons originally, but they have been overcome) and she is still working. at EPA in the Research Triangle Park. > > Maurice > > > > > > > -----Original Message----- > From: Judy Duffy <judyduffy@aol.com> > To: irl-carlow@rootsweb.com <irl-carlow@rootsweb.com> > Sent: Fri, Jun 25, 2010 11:50 am > Subject: Re: [IRL-CARLOW] IRL-CARLOW Digest, Vol 5, Issue 242 > > > My Borris relatives are Cowmans. 3. Hi Maurice, I have been going through my files and notes and database of Carlow Cummins, Comen, etc. There are seemingly hundreds of Patricks who match the approximate birth date. We would need to have a bit more info to perhaps narrow it down. I looked at the census records where I could find him in Baltimore, and they indicate that he came to the US in 1862 and was naturalized in 1866. You have a copy of the naturalization papers - Was the only witness his father-in-law; usually there were two. Did he have any close associates or friends in Baltimore? It would not be unlikely that he went to live where previous relatives or neighbors had already immigrated and formed something of a community. In viewing the census records, I noted that his oldest son was named John. Irish tradition has it that generally the eldest son is named for the paternal grandfather. Do you know why the other researcher believes the father's name to be Patrick? In my own personal experience, most children baptized pre-famine in Ireland did not have a double forename, such as Patrick James. So I don't think it would help to look specifically and exclusively for that. I can tell you for sure that the CUMMINS who lived in Carlow Town did not ALL move away to Tipperary. They were still there well into the 1900s, and I believe there are still some living in the area. If the name was specifically restricted to Comen, then I cannot say for sure, as I don't think I have seen that specific name in Carlow town. At least one family of Cummins of Carlow town moved there from Tinryland, just to the north. But there are Cummins, Commins, Cowman, and an endless number of variations in every Catholic parish in Co. Carlow. If you have any information that might help to narrow the search, let me know. Since he was probably Catholic, I would leave the more obviously English spellings of Cummings and Cuming out of your search. Again from my own experience, it was unlikely that Patrick changed his surname on the ship. There are lots of misconceptions about that. It was generally done on arrival, and was much more common among non-English language immigrants. Although, granted some brogues were difficult to understand, Carlovians mostly spoke English, and the education level of the average Irish Catholic was quite good and most could read and write. If he did change his name it was more likely to escape or avoid some criminal charge, whether founded or not. Well, enough for now. Let me know if you can offer any other clarification. 3. I believe this record relates to Hugh Cuming who was the business associate of Benajmin D'Israeli of Beechy Park, Rathvilly (purported uncle of the British Prime Minister). Hugh was also executor of Benjamin's estate, and lived in an adjoining estate to Beechy Park, called Bough. I haven't done any follow-up research to the origins or descendants of Hugh Cuming, as it is very unlikely he has any connection to my own Cummins family, but there is a brief write-up on my Cummins website http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~cummins/D%27IsraeliCuming. htm and a transcript of a deed where Hugh, as executor, sells Beechy Park to James Eustace. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~cummins/Deed735-501319.htm >From the deed that Michael P. posted it appears Hugh had a wife Ann and a son William. Perhaps a check of the COI records now on-line might reveal some additional info. I believe I will add this document to the page on my site, to provide additional reference. 2. Judy, Thanks. I'll try to track down references to Borris on the website. The main reason for writing back to you is that my wife Joan is from Omaha. Her maiden name is Tesarek.
