Not aware of "Books of Cemetery Inscriptions" however many of the Memorial Inscriptions for County Carlow have been listed in the "Journal for the Memorials of the Dead" which are in most libraries in Ireland. I have listed a considerable number of the Memorials on the website listed below however there are still a significant number to be added to this project. http://home.people.net.au/~ousie/county_carlow_memorials_of_the_dead_JPMD.htm or you could just use the pico search at http://home.people.net.au/~ousie/county_carlow_information.htm Susie Warren > Message: 1 > Date: Thu, 1 Jul 2010 15:24:57 +0100 > From: Treacy Breen <tab1310@hotmail.co.uk> > Subject: [IRL-CARLOW] Books of Cemetery Inscriptions. > To: <irl-carlow@rootsweb.com> > Message-ID: <BAY156-w334992CAFA3DB3635B9843E6CD0@phx.gbl> > Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" > > > Hi Listers, > Hoping someone might be able to tell me, where I might be able to buy > Books of Cemetery Inscriptions for all of Co Carlow. Can these be bought > online? > Thankyou > Treacy > _________________________________________________________________ > http://clk.atdmt.com/UKM/go/197222280/direct/01/ > Do you have a story that started on Hotmail? Since my eyes are about bug-eyed from inserting hyperlinks and whatnot for a bunch of records, this is the last bit that I intend to upload today. Time to go for a walk in the woods. The lsat page I have uploaded is a table that tracks the various JACKSONs who show up in Griffiths in Co. Carlow. I have added a map which shows that the preponderance of them are clustered in the northerly part of Carlow. I am still no closer to knowing where they may have come from but at least we have them linked back to a presence that is at least as early as the early 1700s. SEE: http://www.thesilverbowl.com/maps/Carlow/JACKSONs-Griffiths-Carlow.html I am sure - as always - that I have an error or three. Please let me knowCar when you trip over them and I will clean up the rubble. Sharon -- Sharon Oddie Brown Roberts Creek, BC, Canada. Susie, I want to thank you for your transcriptions from the JPMD. In searching through them I found what I believe could be a link to my Nowlan family and I wanted to share my finding with the others on the list. In the Kellistown cemetery transcriptions I found the following: ++++++++++++++++++++++ 'The next five monuments are in the Nave of the old Priory':- _____ "This stone Erected by EDWARD NOWLAN (- -) Memory of his Wife BRIDGET NOWLAN who Departed this life 16th of April 1700 aged 52 years also two of their children Lord have mercy on their souls Amen." _____ I.H.S. "This stone erected by EDWARD and JAMES NOWLAN of Shrule near Carlow in memory of their Father and Mother also CATHERINE the Beloved and Affectionate wife of JAMES NOWLAN who departed this life the First of March 1785 aged 30 years She was Sanctified with Every virtue and after a tedious illness was called to receive her reward in a better world Amen." ______ "Here lieth the body of THOMAS HANLON who departed this life September the 6th 1786 aged 24 years. ______ "Here lies the Remains of JOHN HANLON of Laughe and his Wife ALICE HANLON alias KEHOE, the latter Departed this life February 24th 1789 aged 70 years. May they rest in Peace Amen." ______ "This stone was Erected by Mrs. ANNE KINSELLA of Upper Church Street in the City of Dublin Baker to the memory of her Beloved Husband PATRICK KINSELLA and their child who Departed this life the 27 of Novr 1820 aged 36 years." JPMD, Vol V, 1901 - 1903 , CARLOW, Page 151. ___ The details above have been transcribed from the Journals titled, "Journal for the Memorials of the Dead" which can be found at County Carlow Library, Tullow Street, Carlow, Co Carlow IRELAND. +++++++++++++++++++++ The second transcription of particular interest as it could fit with what I know of my ancestor James Nowland and hence opens up a new avenue of research. My ancestor James Nowland married Mary Clowry (alias Shortall) in 1793 in Ballon. The witnesses were a James Brennan and a Maurice Dawson. Mary had previously been married to a James Clowry in 1784 suggesting that James might also have been married earlier. The James Nowlan Sr. mentioned on the tombstone above married someone named Catherine sometime before 1785 and had at least two sons James Jr. and Edward. I don't know when the tombstone was erected but, if this James Sr. would be my ancestor, then James Jr. would have been from a first marriage for James and Edward from a second marriage namely to Mary Shortall who we know had at least two sons, Peter (c1796) and Edward (c1798). If the James Sr. mentioned on the tombstone is my ancestor then the tombstone would have been erected sometime in the early 1800s, recall that the son Edward in my family was only born around 1798. FURTHER REMARKS I also note that the tombstone in Kellistown makes the link between traditional Nolan territory (barony of Forth; Ballon area) and traditionnal Brennan territory (area where counties Kilkenny, Carlow, Leix and Kildare are at their closest, the Shrule townland being in this area). This observation is particulary noteworthy for me as a James Brennan was a witness to James Sr's marriage to Mary Shortall in Ballon in 1793. Well that's about it for now! The James Sr. mentioned above may or may not be my ancestor but I thought I would share with you a new line of investigation in my own family research. I have also just posted a page of the Carlow JACKSON BMDs gleaned from the COI records. There were a number of Guards living close to each other in the Crescent: Byrne, Cronin, McHugh and I can't remember the fourth at the moment. Then there was O'Donnell whom I think was a detective. He and family lived further up the Crescent. John McHugh and family moved out to Tinryland but I think the rest remained in the Crescent for the rest of their lives. On the next page under 'Historic Mapping' click on 'Browse Maps'. which will bring up a map of Ireland. Zoom in to get more detail. Yes PP, I believe that is true regarding Guard Dinny Flynn, he came to Carlow in 1923 and remained here until his retirement in the 1970s, having served in no other station !. >From my youth there was Gaurd Hickey, Montgomery St. Gaurd Foley, Barrow Track. Guard Broughal, Pembroke, Guard Byrne, Killian's Crescent, Guard Kelly, Barrack Street, (he was the school attender guard !). Guard McHugh. Guard Behan. Sergeant Reidy, Sergeant O'Neill (who was in the GPO in 1916, and a terror to the travellers ( tinkers) in his time). Supertendent Feore ? . Everyone knew the guards by name at the time, most of them had lived most of their lives, raised families and owned property in Carlow. Have I forgotten a few !. When a new guard arrived it was the "talk of the town" for a while.
