    1. [IRL-CARLOW] Is This Getting Through?
    2. Michelle Wilson
    3. Hi... I am just checking to see if my e-mails are coming through or am I wording them incorrectly. I sent two "Roll Call-Surname" e-mails for two of my families two days ago and have not seen them on line and I am wondering if I am wording them incorrectly or if this address is wrong. Michelle

    3. Thanks Michael, that has given me an even more definite area to look at. Until we discovered the army record we had only verbal stories to go on which pointed us to Kildare and Cork. Everything seemed to come up against a brick wall. The name as we have known it has always been spelt without an e, but I usually look at both spellings as the name with an e is more common. Kay

    2. Barbara, The spelling mistake could have occurred at immigration. It certainly did, in the opposite direction, in church records in Baltimore when the children died! You're right -- it's just a suspicion at the moment. But it's the best I've done after 3 trips to Carlow over 52 years! Originally this family was from England and I ave found them spelling the name Colman as well. You might well be right about Comen but you will need better proof than a uspicion to confirm this besides 1848 is getting a bit late for too many pelling mistakes I would have thought. 1. [IRL-CARLOW] ROLL CALL - Colman
    2. Kay Rule
    3. Hello everyone, I have not posted to this list before, so am hoping someone may be able to help me find my very elusive family. I am looking for Colman, specifically George Colman who, according to his Australian enlistment papers for the army, says he was born "near the town of Carlow in the county of Carlow, Ireland". George is my great-grandfather's brother. I can find no information at all about my great-grandfather, Thomas, apart from the fact that he spent some time in Australia and died in New Zealand in 1903 supposed aged 52. This is a family that seems to excel in stretching the truth, so hopefully someone may be able to help me. Many thanks. Kay from Papakura, New Zealand

    3. Interesting Roger.  In all the tracking of Simon and family, I have never found much.  I have obit for Jeremiah and death record.  It states his name as Jeremiah P. Nowlan..  First I had ever seen the middle initial.  John I have death info and all of his family.  Michael is my link to the family, but he died before death records, but do have pics of his stone and all his children.  Darby is new information to me.  Simon was a Iowa "Greybeard" in the Civil War. Was an old man then, and got a medical discharge.  He died in 1868.  Thank you, Brenda By the way, there was a Simon Nowlan that was in Canada, but none of his life fits my line at all. --- On Sun, 7/4/10, Roger Nowlan <rnowlan@primus.ca> wrote: From: Roger Nowlan <rnowlan@primus.ca> Subject: Re: [IRL-CARLOW] rollcall - SIMON NOWLAN To: irl-carlow@rootsweb.com Date: Sunday, July 4, 2010, 8:21 PM Brenda, You should note that Simon's first child, namely Jeremiah, would also be called "Darby" in Co. 3. Ronnie, Thank you for your feedback and corrections. Rosie and I are both doing well but still very much involved in our grandchild's life, babysitting 3 days a week. I can no longer do genealogical research as intensely as I did before but I do some when I find time, like now, in the context of our national holiday (July 1). Even though I would just love to spend more time exploring my roots in Ireland, I am also deeply spending time with our grandson Simon in his formative years. Rosie and I plan to go again to Ireland but most likely not sometime soon. Our son Michael and daughter-in-law Christiane are expecting their next child in December so that will again bring demands on our time. For now I must content myself with online contact with other researchers but there is nothing like on-the-ground research and we hope to make it to Ireland perhaps in two years from now. 3. Mary, It's been a long time. Your most recent posting clicked with a recent observation. Someone I corresponded with related that a John Nolan, a widower and farmer of Killane, died November 9, 1870, aged 76. I can't provide the source just now but ths would seem to relate to a John Nolan who was at the southern end of the Kilknock townland next to the Killane townland in 1851, along the road leading down from the Kilknock crossroad. I know that these Nolans married into the Connor family so this may be your ancestor. I will have to look deeper at what I have. You can Email me directly. There should also be a death certificate available for this John Nolan. 3. Maribeth, Meg, : What I do know about -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (1) James Nowlan/Nolan b.c. 1803 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1830 : Peterborough & Waterloo Counties, ON James Nolan (c1803 - 1873) - from Co. Carlow, Ireland Catherine McNertney (c1804 - 1883) - from Ireland Children: Anthony (1829), Mary Ann (1831), Martin (1836), Ellen (1838), James (1840) and Michael Hugh (1843) and -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (2) Edward Nowlan/ Nolan -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1834 : Douro township, Peterborough Co., ON Edward Nolan (???? - ????) - from Co. Carlow, IE Mary Eustace (???? - ????) - from Ireland Children: Bridget (1819), Martin (1821), Patrick (1822), Laughlin (1827), James (1830), Thomas (1831), John (1834) and Mary Anne (1839) is found in more detail at my website on the following page: http://www.nolanfamilies.org/index.php?country_id=5&region_id=7 Edward's family was born mostly in the Ballon area and from RC church records it is evident that they had a connection to the Ballykealey and Cunnaberry townlands. As for James' family it is hard to be specific. James only married when he was in Canada. However, it is interesting to note that the first name Martin appears in both families and that they both initially settled in the Peterborough area. !!!Another interesting fact is the first name "Michael Hugh" as a child's name for James. In my research I have uncovered two brothers Michael (c1787) and Hugh (c1795) went to New Brunswick around 1833 and worked in the forest there. They died in the late 1850s and are buried in the Grande-Aldouane cemetery, near Richibucto, NB (where my ancestor Peter married in 1828). I have no definite proof of this yet but I believe that the Michael and Hugh mentioned above, known to have been brothers (and who, in their wills both generously contributed to the building of an RC church in Richibucto), were sons of Michael and Judith Nowlan of Ballinvally. What I know of the couple Michael and Judith Nowlan of Ballinvally is the following:l Hugh Nowlan baptized March 1795; parents: Michael & Judith Nowlan godparents: Bryan Brien, Ann Brien; (husband and wife; Ann believed to have been a Nowlan of Ballinvally) Ballinvally ++++++++++ There is also another baptismal entry of possible interest, as follows: 1793 02 14 Peter Nowlan, Parents: Michael & Judith* Nowlan godparents: James Brennan, Ann* Nowlan; Killane !!!However, it would appear that the first names above of the mother* and godmother* were inadvertantly interchanged in the record. Based upon an extensive analysis of all records 1782-1795, in my opinion the record should read: 1793 02 14 Peter Nowlan, Parents: Michael & Ann* Nowlan godparents: James Brennan, Judith* Nowlan; Killane. +++++++++ To summarize, it is possible that the James Nolan of Peterborough may have been a son of Michael and Judith Nowlan of Ballinvally who had a son named Hugh, a presumed brother to James, in 1795. It is also possible that the latter Judith was the "Judith Cullen married to a Nolan" who was supposedly an aunt of Cardinal Cullen and somehow related to Bishop Nolan of Tullow. If this is true then the "Hugh" honoured here would have been Hugh Cullen of Burrenside, the ancestor of the Ballon -area Cullen. The fact that a Michael Nowlan of Killane, possibly Michael Sr., was buried July 19, 1832, may also be relevant to the stories of James in Peterborough in 1833 and Michael and Hugh in New Brunswick in 1833. 3. Roger _ I have just noticed your message and I presume that you know that the list which you give is a little different from Bill Dillon's report on those headstones in Kellistown. As far as I know you have all the texts that I have but just in case you missed out on anything I will clarify ! In No. 11 on his list which is your second one - Edward and James Nowlan; he has the age as 39 years whereas the journal has it as 30. The text for the John Hanlon stone is as follows on his list "Here lieth the Remains of John Hanlon of Laughe and his wife Alice Hanlon, alias Kehoe, the latter Departed this life February 24th 1788 @ --- yrs, the former July 29th 1780 aged 70 years." Let me know if you want me to go there and check these out - or maybe you already have done so. I hope you are both well - have you another visit to Carlow planned ? In searching through them I found what I believe could be a link to my Nowlan family and I wanted to share my finding with the others on the list. In the Kellistown cemetery transcriptions I found the following: ++++++++++++++++++++++ 'The next five monuments are in the Nave of the old Priory':- _____ "This stone Erected by EDWARD NOWLAN (- -) Memory of his Wife BRIDGET NOWLAN who Departed this life 16th of April 1700 aged 52 years also two of their children Lord have mercy on their souls Amen." _____ I.H.S. "This stone erected by EDWARD and JAMES NOWLAN of Shrule near Carlow in memory of their Father and Mother also CATHERINE the Beloved and Affectionate wife of JAMES NOWLAN who departed this life the First of March 1785 aged 30 years She was Sanctified with Every virtue and after a tedious illness was called to receive her reward in a better world Amen." ______ "Here lieth the body of THOMAS HANLON who departed this life September the 6th 1786 aged 24 years. ______ "Here lies the Remains of JOHN HANLON of Laughe and his Wife ALICE HANLON alias KEHOE, the latter Departed this life February 24th 1789 aged 70 years. May they rest in Peace Amen." ______ "This stone was Erected by Mrs. ANNE KINSELLA of Upper Church Street in the City of Dublin Baker to the memory of her Beloved Husband PATRICK KINSELLA and their child who Departed this life the 27 of Novr 1820 aged 36 years." JPMD, Vol V, 1901 - 1903 , CARLOW, Page 151. ___ The details above have been transcribed from the Journals titled, "Journal for the Memorials of the Dead" which can be found at County Carlow Library, Tullow Street, Carlow, Co Carlow IRELAND. +++++++++++++++++++++ The second transcription of particular interest as it could fit with what I know of my ancestor James Nowland and hence opens up a new avenue of research. My ancestor James Nowland married Mary Clowry (alias Shortall) in 1793 in Ballon. The witnesses were a James Brennan and a Maurice Dawson. Mary had previously been married to a James Clowry in 1784 suggesting that James might also have been married earlier. The James Nowlan Sr. mentioned on the tombstone above married someone named Catherine sometime before 1785 and had at least two sons James Jr. and Edward. I don't know when the tombstone was erected but, if this James Sr. would be my ancestor, then James Jr. would have been from a first marriage for James and Edward from a second marriage namely to Mary Shortall who we know had at least two sons, Peter (c1796) and Edward (c1798). If the James Sr. mentioned on the tombstone is my ancestor then the tombstone would have been erected sometime in the early 1800s, recall that the son Edward in my family was only born around 1798. FURTHER REMARKS I also note that the tombstone in Kellistown makes the link between traditional Nolan territory (barony of Forth; Ballon area) and traditionnal Brennan territory (area where counties Kilkenny, Carlow, Leix and Kildare are at their closest, the Shrule townland being in this area). This observation is particulary noteworthy for me as a James Brennan was a witness to James Sr's marriage to Mary Shortall in Ballon in 1793. Well that's about it for now! The James Sr. mentioned above may or may not be my ancestor but I thought I would share with you a new line of investigation in my own family research.
