    3. Ronnie, I have a subscription to the "Worldvitalrecords.com" databases and, among other things, this enables me to determine the filing/index information for Irish wills held at the National Archives in Dublin. To give you a jumpstart in furthering your Dowling research I did a lookup for wills for the names of Timothy and Patrick Dowling. Attached is a document with the index information for the wills I found. You may want to take a look at some of these wills when you next go to Dublin or order them (order form attache) by regular mail. I also attached other Dowling information of possible interest. Here also are the particulars for the contact person at the National Archives: Pauline Dunne Reader Services Section National Archives Bishop Street Dublin 8 Payments for copies of wills may be made by cheque or postal order. They do not have facilities at present to process credit card payments. Ordering from Canada Pauline Dunne gave me a round figure of 4 Euros to cover postage and handling for rach copy of a will. It may be less for Ireland. Well Ronnie that's about it for now. 3. Roger having read the following Message 2 I decided to check my 'Journal for the Memorials of the Dead' material just in case I transcribed them incorrectly. The transcriptions referred to in your email from the JPMD are correct on the website. If there is a mistake it may have been at the time of original transcription from the headstone to the JPMD transcripts and may need checking against the original headstone if it has survived. Carlow, you might want to check out this website: www.countycarlowcooganimmigrants.com Some of my relatives are in these letters. There is a list of surnames, and alot of other information. You might find some leads. And don't forget to also post on the County Carlow rootsweb board. Debbie

    2. Matilda is my family. She had an uncle who was my gg grandfather. And yes, I recall too that she married Bernard Nolan and then Hugh Nolan. I don't know if I have much of anything on Bernard. All my research is packed up and and the boxes are here and there and piled up ! We have been reorganizing our home office and I have not worked on my Irish genealogy in a long time. Debbie <<There was a branch of Nolans in the Myshall area with the first name Bernard in the mid 1800s, hailing from the area of Rosslee townland.  What I recall from this Bernard is that when he died in 1869 his widow Matilda married another Nolan, a Hugh Nolan (of Shangarry Nolan line). Bernard had two brothers that I know of, a James  who lived in the Myshall area and another named John who lived in New Ross, Co. Wexford. After Bernard's death, a legal nightmare ensued which was eventually resolved in favour of Hugh Nolan who had married the widow Matilda and took in Bernard's children.>>

    1. [IRL-CARLOW] ROLL CALL BELL/STERNE
    2. Marni Foote
    3. BELL family of Minoughrim near Clonegal from 1700s to 1838 specifically Mary Bell and her daughter Susannah (b.1818), as well as Ann Bell sister of Mary and their father John Bell farmer of Minaughrim. The family were farmers in the area and members of St. Fiaacs Church of Ireland Clonegal. Mary and Susannah emigrated to Australia in 1838. STERNE Charles Sterne, possibly of the local Clonegal clan of Sternes who mostly emigrated to Canada but more likely a relative from Wexford. Charles married Mary Bell (see above) and they had a daughter Susannah (see above baptised St Fiaacs) in 1818. Charles was also mentioned as a farmer. It is probable that he died before 1838. thanking you, marni foote

    1. [IRL-CARLOW] Roll call - Neill/O'Neill, Lowery, May, Aylward
    2. Cathie Sherwood
    3. I am looking for any info on the Neil/Neill/O'Neill family (and the others in the subject line) who lived around Newtown, Bagenalstown, Slyguff and Ballinkillen. The family name was Neil in Ireland but changed to O'Neill in Australia. James Neil married Annie Lowery (also Lowry, Lowary, Lourey), the eldest daughter of James and Annie Lowery (nee Walsh/Welsh). Alice, the third daughter of James and Annie Lowery emigrated to Australia in 1882 as did the second daughter Bridget and her husband John Aylward. John and Bridget returned to Ireland in the 1890s and lived in Slyguff but Alice their daughter emigrated in 1914 with one of the May boys. Elizabeth, the 4th daughter married John May and lived in Slyguff. Four of the May sons emigrated to Australia - James, John, William and Patrick (who married Anne or Nan Power). Theresa, the 5th daughter, I think married a Murphy and had a son called John who was born in New York but I have no other info on her. I also think, but can't confirm, that there was another daughter called Kate who also went to America. James Neil's father was also called James Neil but I do not know who his mother was. He married Annie Lowery in 1883 in Bagenalstown and they emigrated in 1885. James' sister Eliza/Elizabeth is also supposed to have emigrated with them. I can find her here in Australia but not in Ireland. Any ideas or help would be appreciated. Regards Cathie

    2. Barbara Corrigan
    3. Maurice Hackettstown is close as are all the places in Carlow but I really don't know I'm sorry which is why I have posted to the list hoping for more information prior to 1832. Originally this family was from England and I have found them spelling the name Colman as well. You might well be right about Comen but you will need better proof than a suspicion to confirm this besides 1848 is getting a bit late for too many spelling mistakes I would have thought. Best wishes, Barbara. I am all but convinced that my great-grandfather Patrick Comen (in the USA) was born there in 1848 as Patrick Coleman. Maurice Bursey Chapel Hill, North Carolina, USA

    1. Re: [IRL-CARLOW] Surname Roll Call: Nolan - Edward Nolan, Carlow -> Joliet, Illinois, c. 1837
    2. Roger Nowlan
    3. Daniel, Looking at your Nolan information and the somewhat scarce first names "Lawrence" and "Bernard" appearing together in your line I tend to agree with you that the Myshall baptism in 1832 would be yours i.e. parents Thomas Nolan and a Fenlon. There was a branch of Nolans in the Myshall area with the first name Bernard in the mid 1800s, hailing from the area of Rosslee townland. What I recall from this Bernard is that when he died in 1869 his widow Matilda married another Nolan, a Hugh Nolan (of Shangarry Nolan line). Bernard had two brothers that I know of, a James who lived in the Myshall area and another named John who lived in New Ross, Co. Wexford. After Bernard's death, a legal nightmare ensued which was eventually resolved in favour of Hugh Nolan who had married the widow Matilda and took in Bernard's children. There are many Nolan lines in the Rosslee townland area including my own (Kilknock-Killane-possibly Rosslee line) so research on Nolans in this area is especially difficult. I recommend that you look through the tombstone inscriptions at my website for the various Nolans buried in the Myshall cemeteries (all of which are viewable via my website). Here is a page (2 of 3) http://www.nolanfamilies.org/gallery/thumbnails.php?album=29&page=2 where you will find a Thomas Nolan of Rosslee buried in the new RC cemetery . The particular Thomas listed here is not the right generation to be the father of your ancestor but at least you can see that the name Thomas had a association with the Rosslee townland. I suggest that you view the other Myshall transcriptions. For example, on page 3 of 3 of the "Myshall-RC-new" cemetery your will also find a reference to a Bernard Nolan of Ballaughmore (townland next to Rosslee). There are 3 Myshall cemeteries documented for Nolans (& related families) at my website: Myshall-RC-new; Myshall-RC-old1; Myshall-RC-old2 To summarize I believe that you are in the right "ballpark". Good luck with your research and let me know if you uncover more on your Nolan family linkage to Co. Carlow.
