    1. Re: [IRL-CARLOW] Pack-Beresford Papers within the PPP.

    3. Thanks Mick. Let's hope the contents of the estate papers materialise one day. On Wed 02/05/12 6:49 AM , michael purcell [email protected] sent: Beresford Papers within the PPP. Because there appears to be such an interest in the Beresford Papers I will try answer your questions in relation to same. The 189 items, referred to in the summation from the "Friends of Carlow", in the Beresford Papers consist mainly of bits and pieces relating to the Pack-Beresford family in Carlow and the Beresford family in Waterford and the Pack family in Kilkenny. The content is of no genealogical value to our IGP members and readers, ( if I thought it was I would have published relevant extracts ). The "items" were given to Pat Purcell in 1960 by Commander Denis Pack-Beresford of Fenagh. I have published many extracts on the Carlow IGP from the Beresford scrapbook, ( Watters eviction etc. ) Following the death in 1986 of the Commander his son Denis Raymond Pack-Beresford handed over several hundred of the Carlow Estate Papers, Ledgers, Rent Books etc. to Carlow County Heritage Society for transcribing but about a week later he phoned me very early one morning from London and told me he wanted them back as he intended to sell them to the highest bidder. We did not get a chance to photocopy them or index the content. The main body of the Beresford family and Carlow Beresford Estate Papers were sold by public auction by Mealy's Auction house circa 1990. They were put up for auction by the Commander's son, Denis Raymond Pack Beresford, he had already sold Fenagh House in 1986. I was not in a position to buy them at the auction and I have no idea who bought them. I hope that concludes discussion on the Beresford Papers. I will answer the questions concerning the other "outside" Papers later in the week. ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to [email protected] [1] with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message Links: ------ [1] mailto:[email protected]

    3. Seeing as Mick was unable to buy the main Bersford collection at auction perhaps it might be an idea to put the remaining papers up for auction, whoever purchased the estate papers might be glad of the opportuntiy to complete the collection, just a thought. Any idea what price the estate papers made ?. > Date: Tue, 1 May 2012 22:12:58 +0100 > From: [email protected] > To: [email protected] > Subject: Re: [IRL-CARLOW] Pack-Beresford Papers within the PPP. > > sorry I should have stated : > " I hope that concludes questions for me regarding the Beresford Papers." > members are free of course to discuss away !. > > On 1 May 2012 21:49, michael purcell <[email protected]> wrote: > > > Beresford Papers within the PPP. > > Because there appears to be such an interest in the Beresford Papers I > > will try answer your questions in relation to same. > > The 189 items, referred to in the summation from the "Friends of > > Carlow", in the Beresford Papers consist mainly of bits and pieces relating > > to the Pack-Beresford family in Carlow and the Beresford family in > > Waterford and the Pack family in Kilkenny. > > The content is of no genealogical value to our IGP members and readers, ( > > if I thought it was I would have published relevant extracts ). > > The "items" were given to Pat Purcell in 1960 by Commander Denis > > Pack-Beresford of Fenagh. 3. What a fantastic effort to get so many documents catalogued! As also mentioned by Bill, i'm intrigued that 189 items can be attributed to the Beresford Papers. I'd be very interested to know if they referred to either William James (Sliguff townland) or to this son Thomas James (Kilgraney townland) during the 19th century, when the Beresford family were landlords to much if not all land at both Sliguff and Kilgraney. I look forward to these papers becoming available. 3. Thank you Michael, I will comment on the "Friends of Carlow" email later when I get an overview of the results. They were incorrect in stating that I would not be in Carlow or online until December. but I will be back and forth to Berlin, researching for a work on The Battle of Berlin 1945., in this quest I have interviewed many German and Russian soldiers who took part in the battle, including a Russian General and Rochus Misch who today at 93 is the last survivor of the Fuhrerbunker, having served as Hitler's communication officer and was part of his Elite bodyguard unit both posts he filled from 1939 to 1945. I will answer the questions posed by our readers regarding the content of the various collections within the PPP later this week, mick On 1 May 2012 19:34, Michael Brennan <[email protected]> wrote: > Dear "Friends of Carlow". > > Very many thanks to all the hard work you have done with the Pat Purcell > Papers. > I too am very grateful to the collection because Mick Purcell was able to > find a large amount of my Brennan family > within the PPP that I didn't know existed. > > I feel very privileged to have been given access to some of this collection > through the Carlow IGP and I too look forward to receiving more interesting > material for the website. > > Thanks You! > > Keep up the good work! > > Regards > Michael Brennan > County Carlow Website: http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~irlcar2/ > My Laois Page: > http://freepages.family.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mjbrennan/index.htm > > > > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to > [email protected] with the word 'unsubscribe' without the > quotes in the subject and the body of the message >

    1. [IRL-CARLOW] 2012, Marc-Ivan O'Gorman+William Deane Taylor / Tanner.
    2. michael purcell
    3. William Deane Taylor / Tanner of Athy Road, Carlow by our own Marc-Ivan O'Gorman of Dublin Street, Carlow in The Irish Times, Monday 30th April 2012. An Irishman's Diary [image: William Deane-Tanner, antique dealer from Carlow, reinvented himself as William Desmond Taylor. He rubbed shoulders with the showbiz elite, including Mary Pickford (above), so where did it go wrong? Photograph: Hulton Archive/Getty Images]William Deane-Tanner, antique dealer from Carlow, reinvented himself as William Desmond Taylor. He rubbed shoulders with the showbiz elite, including Mary Pickford (above), so where did it go wrong? Photograph: Hulton Archive/Getty Images<https://mail.google.com/newspaper/images/2012/0430/1224315361364_1.jpg?ts=1335887218> MARC-IVAN O'GORMAN THE STORY starts like a classic film noir. The early morning peace of a suburban Los Angeles neighbourhood is shattered by a terrified scream. The residents of the Alvarado Court Apartments rush to their front doors to find Henry Peavy, the manservant of the famous Hollywood director, William Desmond Taylor, emerging distraught from 404-B. It is 7.30am, February 2nd 1922 and he has just discovered his employer lying dead on the living room floor, shot in the back. Hollywood would never be the same again. It was a long way from Carlow town where Taylor was born on April 26th, 1872 to British army officer Maj Kearns Deane-Tanner and his wife, Jane. Taylor or William Deane-Tanner, as he was christened, was expected to join the services but had ideas of his own. He was interested in the stage. Perhaps to make a man of him, or perhaps to get him out of sight, William was sent, at the age of 18, to Runnymede Ranch in Kansas, a Wild West finishing school for wayward British Gents. It was here Taylor would fall in love with the freedom of America and make it his home for the rest of his life. After several years criss-crossing the US working in menial jobs, Taylor ended up in New York City. He immediately gravitated to the theatrical circle. He found himself a glamorous wife, a member of the hugely popular dance troupe, the Florodora sextette, a Miss Ethel May Harrison. He exploited his background of old world gentility to enter the antique business. The Tanners had a daughter Daisy, but before Daisy saw her seventh birthday Taylor disappeared. Why exactly he left is unclear but he was never to return. Once again William found himself wandering throughout the US and Canada working variously as a hotel night clerk, in a paper mill, and at a gold mine before finally arriving in Los Angeles. He was now in the right place at the right time, for Hollywood of 1913 needed men with his refined looks, his skill with horses, and his education. At the age of 31, the former antique dealer ditched the name Deane-Tanner and reinvented himself as William Desmond Taylor, actor. He would appear in 27 movies, most notably in the eponymous role of Captain Alvarez (1914), in which, the publicity department claimed, he performed the most dangerous stunt in cinema history by riding his horse at full gallop across a rope bridge. But it was also in this year that his directing career began. He went on to direct 59 films, including the first screen adaptations of Tom Sawyer (1917) and Huckleberry Finn (1920). If the story ended there Taylor would have been just one of the many Irish pioneers of early Hollywood. He rubbed shoulders with the showbiz elite, like America’s Sweetheart, Mary Pickford, and author Somerset Maugham. Well born, well-paid, and well-liked in an industry on the verge of global domination, he had it all. So where did it go wrong? Taylor’s murder was never officially solved, though there are no shortage of theories as to who pulled the trigger. He was avowedly anti-drug and yet his best friend, and the last known person to see him alive, actress Mabel Normand, had a history of drug abuse. It is claimed he confronted dealers, of which there were many preying on the film community at the time. Perhaps he antagonised a murderous drugs peddler? Another theory suggests Mary Miles Minter, a rising star with a penchant for older directors, came to his house with a gun threatening to kill herself in a melodramatic act of unrequited love and in a struggle to restrain her Taylor got shot. Some point to Mary’s controlling mother, Charlotte Shelby, who had a history of threatening her daughter’s co-workers with her 38. The stories abounded – this was Hollywood after all. With the killer on the loose, press speculation dragged on for months. This was the industry’s worst nightmare. At the moment of Taylor’s death Tinsel Town’s image was already becoming tarnished. Roscoe “Fatty” Arbuckle, America’s biggest (in both senses of the word) comedic star was awaiting the jury’s verdict on the second trial for manslaughter of aspiring actress Virginia Rappe. Arbuckle was soon acquitted but the story of Taylor’s murder would run and run. The studio heads knew that in an era of prohibition they had to act fast or public perception of a “Hollywood Babylon” would bring on government regulation or, worse, a complete shutdown. So they recruited Will Hays, the man who had cleaned up baseball, to set up the Motion Picture Production Code, or Hays Code, which would determine the moral standards of Hollywood both on and off the screen for the next 40 years. The film industry would become respectable. >From the first newspaper reports on the day of his death, to the many books devoted to the subject, to the profusion of theories currently circulating the web, there has been a continual fascination with the Taylor story. A story that is said to have inspired Billy Wilder’s movie classic, Sunset Blvd (1950), and consumed generations of movie directors from King Vidor to Kimberly Pierce. Ninety years later, it’s still a compelling tale: of how an Irishman’s murder became Hollywood’s greatest mystery. *MARC-IVAN O'GORMAN* is writer and director of Who Killed Bill? a docu-drama on Newstalk, May 12th & 13th. Taylorfest is a 140th anniversary event screening a selection of Taylor’s films, September 21st-23rd in Carlow. See: william-desmond-taylor.org/taylorfest.

    3. I would like to add my appreciation for all the hard work you have all undertaken. I am sure it was a mammoth and time consuming job. I would be interested in the "Brophy" papers as I am researching a Patrick Brophy of Leighlin. His occupation was a cooper. Regards Elaine Clark Sydney Aust.

    3. A very interesting summary of the PPP contents. Thank you. In mentioning a category such as "Beresford Papers (189 items)", this leaves me wondering if they might be, or include, estate papers, since my forebear had Viscount Beresford as his immediate lessor in Griffiths. To find him there could be a breakthrough. On Tue 01/05/12 3:33 AM , Friend of Carlow [email protected] sent: We have now catalogued the Pat Purcell Papers and have moved the archive to secure storage., Over the years since Pat's death the collection was moved many times, we found it to be in total disorder and whatever format Pat originally had assembled the collection in was long since broken up and had been rearranged many times, with no evidence of organization or function. It was impossible to catalogue on the principle of original order. We have done our best to establish a chronological record inventory arranged by year or if the content overlapped into other years we have attempted to file under subject. There were many gaps as some of the PPP is in other hands having been removed from the main collection. Unfortunately with so little time we were unable to compile an index of surnames. Within the PPP were various collections such as the Brophy Papers (52 items), Marlborough Clake-Douglas Papers (15 items), Toler-Aylward Papers, (324 items ) Vigor Papers ( 430 items), Bunbury Papers (524 items), Beresford Papers ( 189 items), Browne-Clayton Papers (1,750 items, mainly photocopies compiled in recent times with main original collection donated to Carlow County Library), Letters (792 items), Genealogical enquiries (220 dating from 1920s) Irish Republican Brotherhood Papers (129 items), Irish Republican Army records (109 items ), Cumann na mBan records (87 items),War of Independence Records (523 items), Civil War Records (512 items), Political Papers (2,010 items), Photos (128 items), Family (327 items), Legal Papers, Deeds etc. (1,645 items), Duggan Papers (272 items) Religious (413 items), Newspapers (312 items), bound books plus the main collection of the PPP. The hope is that they will remain in storage until such a time as a Archive Centre is established for Carlow. In the meantime we have many photocopies of items which we hope to share as time permits with Carlow IGP in the future. I know that Mick Purcell will be offline until Christmas as he will be in Berlin carrying out research. As we will be operating voluntary from our home computers we can only correspond through the IGP List. We are unable to respond to individual emails.
