    3. Thanks Anna. I have only the one Dowling family : Patrick and Rosanna and their children, Michael, John, Margaret, Teresa, Elizabeth. Plus the two girls mentioned below, Marian and Julia who went to Canada, who appear to have left home before 1901 census. Both 1901 and 1911 census shows Patrick, Rosanna, and family at Broughilstown, Rahill (Rathvilly). The gravestone in St. Patk's I mentioned below also has a James Dowling who died young in 1840, probably a brother of Patrick, and a Michael Dowling of Broughillstwn d. 1885, and his wife Judith, d. 1850, who appear to be Patrick's parents. Don't know how many Dowling were in Rathvilly in those days, but would guess your Dowlings are connected to this family somehow. 2. You are so welcome...I'm glad I can contribute to the site, and Michael is such a great webmaster. -- Sent from my HP TouchPad _________________________________________________________________ On May 17, 2012 5:18 PM, karen conderan <[email protected]> wrote: Thanks Maribeth, for submitting info and photos of gravestones in St. Patrick's, Rathvilly! And thanks Michael B. for posting the info to the list, otherwise I might have missed it. The image of the Dowling family gravestone provided info I needed re Patrick and Rosanna Dowling. Two of Patrick and Rosanna's daughters, Marian and Julia, emigrated to Toronto and both married there, 1915/16. Marian married my grandfather's brother, James Conderan; James's father Patrick Conran/Conderan, was originally from Clonmelsh. I've often wondered, but have no idea if the two families knew each other in Ireland, or if it was a chance meeting in Toronto... If anyone searching the Dowlings of Rathvilly wants more info on Marian and Julia, please let me know. 1. [IRL-CARLOW] Earl of Kenmare (Browne family of Kerry & Carlow)
    2. Roger Nowlan
    3. Greetings All! Within the last week or so I made a posting where I identified a landowner in the Ballyellin area as “Earl of Kanmare” (sic Kenmare). I have now researched who this person might have been and find that it was someone from the Browne family, no doubt someone related to the “Browne” in “Browne-Clayton papers”. The Earlship was created in 1801 and the ancestor of the 2nd Earl of Kenmare (the one mentioned in the will I discussed in my Email) was a Thomas Browne, 4th Viscount Kenmare. Information on this ancestor is found at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Browne,_4th_Viscount_Kenmare and I note in particular this family’s connection to the Jacobite cause and its Roman Catholic affiliation. Here is the relevant excerpt from the webpage identified above: “ This was an Irish peerage created after the removal of James II from the English throne, but during the period when James was de facto king of Ireland, before the conquest of Ireland by William III. The first and second viscounts had fought for James II but seem never to have been formally attainted under William. Consequently, the peerage remained on the Irish patent roll in a constitutionally ambiguous position, but was not formally recognized by the Protestant political establishment. Thomas Browne was reportedly educated at Westminster School until the death of his father in 1736. Browne's older brother, Valentine, had died in 1728, so Thomas inherited the peerage and the estate (of more than 120,000 acres) intact. Repeated attempts to persuade him to convert to the English established church came to nothing, even though his refusal cost him a university matriculation at Oxford and a place in the English House of Commons. In 1750, he married Anne Cooke, daughter of Thomas Cooke of Painstown, County Carlow, with whom he had two children. “ Bye for now, Roger

    2. Nelly/Nellie was not only a nickname for Ellen or Eleanor but also for Helen. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Roger Nowlan" <[email protected]> To: [email protected] Sent: Wednesday, May 16, 2012 8:48:38 PM Subject: Re: [IRL-CARLOW] Anty Kate, Thank you for your feedback. Two other nicknames which you may want to add to your list are: Ally for Alice, and Darby for Jeremiah. I also have come across "Piery" for Peter (derived from Norman root "Piers", originally pronounced Pierre). Sue Clement's suggestion that Onny may be for Honora also seems likely to me.
