The footage appears to have been posted by the Continuity IRA who recently claimed responsibility for the fatal shooting of a PSNI officer who was lured to his death while responding to an emergency call. I came across this website and felt it worth sharing with everyone. It’s got some wonderful information and newsarticles about the Irish war for independence on British soil. http://www.donmouth.co.uk/local_history/ira/jarrow_isdl.html
Nationalist and Leinster Times. Jan. 1942. On Thursday 8th January 1942, Dr Sterling Berry held a sworn Inquiry in the Town Hall, Carlow at the request of the Minister for Public Health re representations that the following graveyards are overcrowded ;- Graveyard attached to the former Carlow Union Workhouse ; the Graveyard attached to St Mary's Protestant Church ; the burial ground known as "Old Graves" and the burial ground situated at Castle Hill, Carlow. A report from Dr. A. McMahon to the Carlow Board of Health and Carlow Urban Council recommended that burials be discontinued in the four burial grounds for the protection of public decency. There were no objections received except in the case of the "Old Graves" and a number of people gave evidence expressing a wish that themselves or some members of their families be allowed to be buried there. Rev. Archdeacon Ridgeway stated he heard no objection to the closing of St Mary's Protestant Church. No burials had taken place there during the past 10 years. He was also interested in the graveyard at Castle Hill which is very small. He thought the human remains there could be removed to the hollow in St Mary's. If Mr Governey had lived he would have seen that was done. Dr Berry said he would see the place before he left Carlow. Mr William Duggan, Solicitor for the Urban Council read a passage from the late Bishop Comerford's Book which stated ; " The burial ground called "The Graves" lies near the Barrow on the north side of the town. It is said to have been granted by the Earl of Thomond when possessor of the Castle and other extensive property. Bishop Doyle refers to it as a piece of ground adjoining the town which in the time of persecution had been granted to the Catholics for the burial of their dead, their parish church and its cemetery having been appropriated to the use of the despoiters [ sic ] of the country". Bishop O'Keeffe of Kildare and Leighlin is buried there.

Nationalist and Leinster Times. 1st August 1942. MR. PATRICK SNODDY. It is with deep regret we announce the death of Mr Patrick Snoddy which occurred after a brief illness at his residence, Quinagh, Carlow. Deceased had been in good health up to a few days before his death and his rather sudden demise cast a gloom over the district where he was extremely popular. He had been in the employment of the Great Southern Railways for almost half a century, and retired on pension some years ago. He farmed for a number of years at Quinagh. During the Black and Tan and Civil wars his home was always open to the volunteers on the run and the help and kindness they received will ever be remembered. The funeral which took place to Ballincarrig, was of very large dimensions and was a striking testimony to the memory of the deceased. Rev. Tom Fennell officiated at the graveside. The chief mourners were --- Mrs Mary Snoddy (wife) ; Sam, John, Michael and Tom (sons) ; Elizabeth Leonard, Catherine Jones, Anne Phelan, Bride Goebbels, Margaret Purcell, Esther Purcell (daughters) ; Pado Redmond, Patrick, Pascal and John Phelan, Patrick, Edward and John Jones, Brendan Snoddy, Pat Snoddy, James Snoddy, Oliver Snoddy, Michael Snoddy, Thomas Snoddy, Danial Snoddy, Samuel Snoddy, John Noel Purcell, John Purcell, Pat Purcell, (grandsons) ; John Slater, Kilkenny (brother-in-law) ; John Slater, Junior, Edward Slater, Paddy Slater, Edward, John and Joe Walsh, James McCartney, Donal McCartney, Liam McCartney, Joe Doyle, (nephews) ; Joe Leonard, Charlie Goebbles, Paddy Jones, Joe Phelan, Pat Purcell, Michael Purcell, (relatives). A large number of Mass Cards were received.
thanks Michael I always thought they had been destroyed in a fire or something similar. Probably mixing it up with some of our records. Unfortunately for genealogists, the Irish census records for 1861 and 1871 were destroyed by order of the government shortly after the statistical information for each was gathered. The government finally realized the value of keeping census returns, but then ordered the destruction of the 1881 and 1891 census during World War I. Possible suggested causes range from lack of space to using the pulp to alleviate a paper shortage. Regardless of the reason, this sanctioned destruction was very complete. The only remnants are transcriptions from Enniscorthy parish, County Wexford (1861) where only the Catholic families’ entries were transcribed, and Drumcondra and Loghrackan, County Meath (1871). Both sets are held in the National Library of Ireland (NLI) in Dublin. Yes Germaine's hotel is still there in Baltinglass. It belongs to a member of the Grangecon branch of the family. I remember going there in 1990 after a local football win and the place was so jam packed with revellers I was scared it might fall down! I think some major improvements have been made since then. I heard that Joe Germaine, the grand old man of that family died last year and his son now runs the pub.
