    3. In the PPP there are at least 5 versions of this case recorded, all in a different hand. Short of having a photocopier it appears there may have been several clerks recording the proceedings, with slight variations on each copy. It appears that Walsh and Headen were sentenced to be transported but on a document dated the same day they were declared "Objects of Mercy" by members of The Grand Jury and the Transportation Order was rescinded. Following the death of his wife Frank retired to St Bridget's Hospital in Carlow, he gave me a copy of his booklet " Memories of Frank Ellis" shortly before he died in 2001. 1. [IRL-CARLOW] Sir Thomas P. Butler. 1885.
    2. Michael Purcell
    3. The Nationalist and Leinster Times. Nov. 14th 1885. [ Editorial. ] A RACK-RENT CHAMPION. Sir Thomas P. Butler's appeal to the Electors of Carlow, to withhold the promise of their votes until they shall have heard what he has to say to them, is one of the richest jokes of the period. The abracadabra by which he holes to cajole the rack-rented householders of the county must be very different from the hysterical shriek of the Loyal and Patriotic Unionists from the closing circle of fire that they themselves have kindled. He will, doubtless, be discreetly silent about rent if he holds ( as it is to be presumed ) his agents views. This gentleman tries to bolster up his refusal of a reduction by the declaration that in 1850 prices were as low, and rents as high, as now. If Sir Thomas for his own amusement push that argument to its logical conclusion, he may perceive its cogency for a return to the feudal times or the restoration of the Heptarchy. The local deadheads deserve credit for having selected him amongst them who was, personally, least objectionable. But what does he represent , save the moribund school of politicians whose stage craft might be summed up in the saying of the Lord of Ferney - " THE PEOPLE ARE BEASTS OF BURDEN, WHO REQUIRE THE YOKE AND GOAD". The choice of the Conservatives must have been influenced by the consideration that Sir Thomas is a lineal descendant of one of those " slaves who sold their land for gold, as Judas sold his God". At a County Cattle Show Sir Thomas once made the proud boast that he had given up the sword for the ploughshare, showing that he preferred to military glory the indolent ease of a bucolic aristocrat. He would be acting wisely in the showing now, as then, a practical belief in the truth of the adage that declares discretion to be the better part of valour - and so avoiding the attacks of the Irish Party as adroitly as he did the Russian bullets at the Crimea. [ the following week Sir Thomas replied to the editorial ] TO THE EDITOR OF CARLOW SENTINEL AND THE CARLOW NATIONALIST. Ballin Temple, Carlow, 17th November 1885. Sir-- In the concluding paragraph of your leading article on me in the Nationalist of the 14th, you imply that I avoided the Russian bullets in Crimea. For your information and that of your readers, allow me to say that on the night of September 7th 1855, I was in command of a detachment on fatigue duty, carrying shot and shell to the various batteries engaged in the bombardment of Sebastopol. Men of my party were both killed and wounded. In the action before Sepastopol, September 8th, I carried the Queen's Colours of the 56th Regiment, and we did not try to avoid the bullets. Yours truly, (signed) THOMAS P. BUTLER.

    3. I don't know if there are any members of that Ellis family still living in Carlow. I know there was an Ellis family living in JKL Avenue but I don't think they are related. I could be wrong. A number of your Ellis family were involved in the printing trade. I believe William may have moved to Carlow from Dublin to work as a compositor (now commonly called a typesetter) in the Nationalist and Leinster Times. His son, John, was the Works Manager in 'The Nationalist' for very many years. He was an absolute gentleman. Another son, Richard (Dick) also worked in 'The Nationalist' and Joseph was involved in the Insurance business. Dick was a bit of a poet as well and also a lovely man. John (or Johnny as he was known) had sons also involved in the printing business. The eldest, Johnny Jnr., was a journalist, starting in the Nationalist and ending up in the newsroom of RTE. I think he has family and they are probably in the Dublin area. William (or Billy as he was known) was also a compositor and for many years was in charge of the newspaper make-up. He was unmarried. A third son, Brendan, was also a compositor and in the late '60s he moved to Naas to work in the Leinster Leader. He died unexpectedly in 1993. He had three sons. I think a daughter of the original William was married to a man by the name of Harvey and their son, Harry, also worked in the Nationalist as a compositor. I believe the family lived in Charlotte Street near the junction with Brown Street. I think Harry had siblings but I do no know for certain. Sometime in the '60s Harry's wife inherited a hotel in Gardiner Street, Dublin and Harry and family moved up there to manage the business. I believe they then sold that and moved to somewhere close to the Kilkenny/Carlow border to run a guesthouse. I think he had two children. I hope this adds something you your knowledge. J. J.     3. The Nationalist and Leinster Times. March 1943. Mrs Mary Ellis. The death occurred on Sunday 14th March of Mrs Mary Ellis, Charlotte Street, Carlow, after a short illness. She was relict of William Ellis for many years foreman in the printing works of "The Nationalist and Leinster Times" Ltd. Deceased was of a quite and retiring disposition devoted to the interests of her family and she was held in great esteem not alone by her immediate neighbours but by a wide circle of friends. She was a member of an old and respectable Carlow family. A sincere and practical Catholic and a model head of a Catholic home, she had all the consolations of Holy Church in her last illness and passed to her reward fully resigned to God's Holy Will. The funeral to St Mary's Cemetery was very large and representative and a fitting tribute to her memory. A large number of Mass Cards were received. Chief mourners were :- John, William, Richard, Joseph, Francis, ( sons ); Mrs Harvey, Mrs Tyrell, ( daughters ), Liam, Sean, Colm O'Neill, ; Billie, Johnny, Aidan, Brendan, Oliver, and Conleth Ellis, Henry Harvey, ( grandsons ), James Coady, Nephew;

    3. Frank was the last member of the Ellis family, interview with him published in Carloviana some years back, his nephew was Willie Ellis, obit below. Carlow People. 01 December 2000 Carlow man, Frank Ellis celebrated his 90th birthday in style last weekend at the Seven Oaks hotel with a feast fit for a king. Carlow man, Frank Ellis celebrated his 90th birthday in style last weekend at the Seven Oaks hotel with a feast fit for a king, buckets of champagne and a party he'll never forget! Frank, formerly of Charlotte Street and currently living at St. Brigid's nursing home had the time of his life last Saturday night when he was joined by his family and close friends to celebrate him being 90 years young. The party was organised by Frank's nieces Sr. Elizabeth Maxwell from Dublin, Rosemary Brehon from Limerick who along with the rest of his nieces and nephews - Elizabeth Grimes, Howth, Anne McNally, Lanesborough, Anne Lightford, Dublin, Billy Ellis, Graiguecullen, Mary Fitzpatrick, Riverside Drive, Carlow, Tom and Jackie Maxwell, Lanesborough and family friends Michael and Kathleen O'Reilly joined in the festivities with great gusto. 16 friends and family in total, sat down to a sumptuous meal in the hotel with many of them claiming to have had the best night of their lives, says Frank. Regarding the secret to his longevity and good health, Frank says he's not exactly sure. 'I don't really know what it is but I had a hard start in life and for many years I went around on a bicycle in all weather selling insurance and I think that built up my stamina. I've no aches and pains and I feel great - I'm here forever' he quipped cheerfully. Willie Ellis. 08 August 2007 Deep sadness was felt by many when it was learnt that Carlovian William Willie' Ellis, Burrin Street, Carlow, had departed this world to enter and enjoy his new eternal home. Willie who was a true gentleman in every respect, died at St. Luke's Hospital, Kilkenny on Wednesday, July 22. As one Carlovian to another it was a delight to reminisce with Willie about the good old days. For many long years Willie was an invaluable member of the Old Carlow Society. Always with his camera at hand Willie walked up hills and down valleys, while peeking into every nook and cranny to ensure he missed nothing as he recorded items of historical value on many a trip around the county. Willie, with his expertise and knowledge, will be sadly missed by those who had the pleasure of knowing him well. Sincere sympathy is extended to his nephews and nieces, extended family members, friends and former workmates who will always hold dear the memories of Willie. May the Lord welcome Willie into His kingdom and grant him eternal rest in the Garden of Paradise.
