    1. [BELFAST] Belfast - Hamilton and Mateer/Mc Tier Families
    2. Jill Forster
    3. Hello Listers My Hamilton family was in Belfast from at least 1826. John Hamilton and his wife Mary Mateer/McTeer/McTier. had children there from at least 1826 to 1842 (John, Mary, Alexander, RoseAnn, Eliza, Alexander, William, David, Mary, Annabella). Mary Mateer was baptised in St Anne's Shankill on the 7th September, 1796 the daughter of John McTier and Eliza. The first two children were baptised at St Annes but the remainder were baptised at Fisherwick Presbyterian Church in Belfast. My gr gr grandfather William born 1836 apparently had his basic school education in Ireland and appears in 1851 in Edinburgh where he trained as a schoolteacher, later becoming the headmaster of a C of E school in Hove Sussex and later in Sth London. He is not in the 1851 census of Scotland so probably came directly there from Ireland. A local researcher could not find a marriage for John and Mary but said the original Belfast records on film were of such poor quality that they were mostly illegible. John snr was a Shopkeeper according to his son William's marriage certificate in England. Despite calling up a lot of marriage records for the children other than William, I have no definite sightings in Belfast of any of my Hamiltons or Mateer/Mc Teer/McTier. None of the Belfast death/burial records turn up any definite links. Anyone searching for Hamiltons or Mateer/McTier? Regards Jill Forster Sydney Australia
