    3. Those named below are from my father's side, I believe they were all Protestants. My father was born in the Shankilll area of Belfast in 1925, served in the Royal Navy in the second world war and emigrated to Australia in 1949. I have information about his father and grandfather and great-grandfather but only the name of his 2x Grand-father (William). McIlwaine, William Henry born about 1838 in Magheradrool, Down, Ireland, married Murray, Sarah born about 1838 Magheradrool, Down, Ireland. His father is William McIlwain(e) they were both Tailors as were many of William Henry's sons. Spence, Samuel born about 1834 Down Ireland. His daughter Margaret Spence was born about 1862 in we think Clogher Lisburn Down. She married Samuel James McIlwaine on 9 Jan 1880 in Belfast. They had 5 sons and 7 daughters. She moved to Quebec Canada in 1922 to live with some of her daughters and died in Detriot USA 1942. Cranston, John born about 1832 in Belfast Ireland, married Graham, Margaret Belfast Antrim Ireland, she was born in Ballyboggy, Donaghy, Antrim They had a son Joseph Cranston born 4 Jul 1868 in Belfast He married Amelia Elizabeth Goode (nee Browne) on 1 Jul 1893 in Belfast. He had 2 daughters with Amelia and then seems to have disappeared. Browne, David born about 1844 we think Belfast Ireland. His daughter Amelia Elizabeth born about 1862 married Albert Richmond Goode, then as a widow married the above mentioned Joseph Cranston in Belfast. My DNA is registered on GEDMatch A823755 is my ID I would love to find more information on all of these, but especially Margaret Spence's mother and Amelia Elizabeth Brown's mother. Any help will be appreciated Kind regards Mike from Adelaide Australia

    3. Good afternoon Mike, This is indeed a long shot but anytime I see Spence from Ireland it peaks my curiosity. My grandmother, was Martha Spence(b. 1896 ?) from Ireland. She married by grandfather, Alexander Angus (b. 1894) in Glasgow in 1917 As the family story goes: Both her parents were dead in an auto accident (!) so she moved to Glasgow to live with an aunt. Parents names: Henry Spence and Martha ? Thank you in advance, Heather in Montreal. PS. Just picked up our son from the airport this morning after a month in Australia., Melbourne, Brisbane, Cairns and Whitsunday Islands. He loved it all - thinking about a return trip next year. 3. Hi Heather Thanks for your interest, I'm also interested as well, whenever I see the name Spence in relation to Northern Ireland. I checked on the Irish civil records website https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie and found 4 Martha Spence records between 1894 and 1898 but none with a fathers name of Henry. Of course, Martha may be a nickname or a middle name. I'm glad your son loved Australia. Have you had your DNA tested? That may be a help Kind regards Mike On Sun, 12 Aug 2018 at 05:33, Heather chambers <[email protected]> wrote: > Good afternoon Mike, > > This is indeed a long shot but anytime I see Spence from Ireland it peaks > my curiosity. > > My grandmother, was Martha Spence(b. 1896 ?) from Ireland. > > She married by grandfather, Alexander Angus (b. 1894) in Glasgow in 1917 > > As the family story goes: > > Both her parents were dead in an auto accident (!) so she moved to Glasgow > to live with an aunt. > > Parents names: Henry Spence and Martha ? > > Thank you in advance, > > Heather in Montreal. > > PS.
