    1. [BELFAST] WETHERALL - Holywood, Down
    2. Christine Tregonning
    3. Dear List Members, I am after some information about a William WETHERALL who lived at Holywood in County Down. I understand that this place is close to the city of Belfast so I have sent my request to both lists. I believe that William was listed as a freeholder in 1876, but when his youngest daughter was married in New Zealand in 1886 William was described as “the late William Wetherall, Hollywood, County Down, Ireland. My questions are as follows: Is there a readily accessible index of deaths in existence for this period? Would the index include the age of the deceased? If I could obtain a death certificate, what information would it contain? Is it possible that there is a death notice or an obituary for William? If so what newspapers should I be looking at? Is there anyone who may be able to do a lookup for me? As far as I am aware the WETHERALLS were Presbyterian. What church is William likely to be buried in and are there any monumental inscriptions that someone would be happy to check for me. I have an idea that William is the brother of my ancestor and I am trying to find some information that would help me confirm this as well as confirming their parentage. Any other ideas or information would be appreciated. Regards, Christine No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Free Edition. 3. Christine, I can answer some of the questions. Yes, and index of deaths is available for the area. The index will give you the name and age of the person, as well as the volume and page numbers for record of the death. With the year, volume, and page numbers, you can get a death certificate. The death certificate will get you the name, address of the deceased, the location and cause of death, and the name of the informant as well as other info. You can look at the index at an LDS Family History Center. You will then have to order the certificate from either the GRO in Ireland, or PRONI in Belfast. The closest example I have of a death record to your year is one from 1908. Contact me off list if you like and I will send it to you. Andy Airriess

    3. Hi Andy, Thank you for your very swift reply. In New Zealand the death certificates from about 1876 onwards are very detailed and include the parents names and occupations as well as the place of birth of the deceased and length of residence in the country. I am assuming from your reply that this is not the case in Ireland. I have had a quick look on the family history library catalogue and am I right in assuming that the deaths are indexed by year in which case I might have to order 10 films in order to find the correct entry. 3. Christine - not much help, but in Griffiths Valuation around 1864 - William Wetherall, Townland of Holywood, Co. Down. What was his daughter's name? Perhaps I can find her birth for you.
