With regards to this subject line, my grandfather,Thomas McAllister, was supposed to be deaf and dumb, was born around 1900. My question is:- At what age would a child be diagnosed as deaf and dumb? Would a child automatically be sent off to an institute? I cannot find any details on Jean's website that would answer this question! Anyone any ideas please? Hi Michael I think that diagnosis would depend on the degree of deafness and a lot of other variables. Children did not all go to institutions, my mother's cousin who was born in the 1920s did not but she did attend a school for deaf children. Perhaps you could research through Google and find some more about the history of deafness and its treatment. Hi Michael, I have looked through the records for the deaf & dumb institute on my web site for the 1901 census. The youngest inmate was 7 years old. On another page for the blind institute and where the inmates could also be deaf there was a child aged 5. I hope this might help with your question.
