    3. Thanks Dougie, I still need to know if the legal age to be married at the time was 18, 16, or 12 or some other age. That would determine what then would be called "under age". 3. Hello Al I may be wrong here - I occasionally am - but I think 'under age' refers to being under 21. Anybody under 21 needed parent or guardians consent to the marriage. A marriage where one of the participants was aged less than the legal requirement would not have been allowed - it would have been illegal and no churchman (priest/vicar/minister) or registrar would have performed the ceremony if they had known one of the parties was under the legal age for marriage. That doesn't stop somebody declaring they are older than they are and being married under age, but it would have been kept secret. In England in 1858 the legal age for marriage was 12 for girls, but I don't know about Ireland. 3. Hi Ann, Thanks for the info. If it was 12 in England at the time, would it not have been the same for Ireland as they were all under the Westminster Parliament? The same laws would apply throughout the United Kingdom. Maybe some legal listers might let us know. 3. Al; The full legal age for marriage was 21 years of age. If the party marrying was that age or over more often than not the word "Full" would be put in the "Age" column. If the person were not 21 or older the actual age would always be placed in that column. Having looked at hundreds of marriage registrations I've never seen one below 16 with the majority of the underages being 18,19, or 20. And my impresson is that no more than 5% of those i reviewed were under full legal age. Hope this helps.
