    3. Andy, Thank you for sharing your pictures. I had hoped to see Belfast next year, but it seems the trip will be held off for a few more years. Your pictures are the next best thing to being there. Thanks, Wanda Whitby, Ontario, Canada -----Original Message----- From: Mary Adams Arroyo [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: September 11, 2005 2:53 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [BELFAST] Re: Belfast Photos online Wow! 3. Beautiful pics. Brought back memories of my trip last spring. I so want to go back to Belfast. I didn't have enough time. I hope to go next year, if not, the year after. I'm starting to save for it. I saw that there were troubles last night. Rather sad. Mom and I had both picked on the underlying tension in the city when there in May, and we were "felt out" in conversations with the lovely people as to where our sympathies lay. (I have both Protestant and Catholic ancestry, and deftly avoided the subject altogether.) But the problems last night reminded me that the tension is never far from the surface. :( I just wish PRONI or the Church of Ireland would let the LDS film more. I worry about record loss due to strife if it refires. Irish research is so difficult from outside of Ireland (I'll refrain from my comments on the very overpriced "Heritage Centres") due to the LAST major record loss. I wonder, is it not wanting to allow access other than there, or does it come down to money issues? Plus it saddens me to see problems in the city that I grew to love in a short time. It was rather depressing to read about the rioting last night. I met so very many friendly people there. For that alone, I can't wait to go back. 3. It was very interesting being there when we were. I did too note some "problems." Bricks in the road one morning following an assault on a police vehicle for example. When we stopped at the bonfire being built our "tour guide", a Catholic, told me, a Catholic whose NI rellies were dyed-in-the-wool Orange, my Catholic wife, and our "other faith" friend, that we should be going from our location because we were "attracting attention." Interesting. Had an interesting conversation with a gent from Dublin yesterday who said that the Protestants should make a deal now while they can. The rapidly growing young Catholic population will guarantee a significant minority population for the Protestants, and if they don't strike the best deal they can now, and the Catholics stick to it, sectarian problems are bound to ensue again, but with a Catholic majority. Police stations there are like jails here, all fortified and all. For those wishing a historical perspective on the issue, I'd recommend "The Holy War in Belfast" by Andrew Boyd. I found it most interesting. http://cgi.ebay.com/Holy-War-In-Belfast-Northern-Ireland-History_W0QQitemZ4574983215QQcategoryZ378QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem Don't everybody go bidding at once now. If anyone can recommen other books on the subject, I'd be interested to compile a list. Andy Airriess
