    3. Dear Listers, Here's my problem. I plan a visit to Belfast this summer and will have only a short period of time to "do" genealogy. Using the indices from the Family History Library here in Fort Myers, Florida, I've accumulated a long list of Birth and Marriage listings for one group of names on my father's side, GILLILAND, WILLIAMSON, MADILL, LATIMER, DONOHOE and MARSHALL from the Cootehill district in Co. Monaghan and another group of names on my mother's side, BROWN, HEANEN, CARLISLE, CROMIE, RITCHIE and RODGERS from the Downpatrick district of Co. Down. In short, I have the year, quarter, volume and page number for each listing. It seems that I can use the computer indices at the GRO to add to my listings, as I understand it, indices are available for births in Northern Ireland from 1922 to 1996, deaths for the same period and marriages from 1845 to 1997. From the GRO web site, it seems that the actual registers are available (for the six counties??) for births from 1864 on, deaths from 1864 on, and marriages from 1922 on in the GRO. Marriage registers are available at the local District Registrar's Office from 1845 on. Questions: 1. Is it the only way to convert my index listings to the actual register entry by ordering the actual certificate from the GRO? 2. How does the search engine at GRO work, do you input a last name, or what?? 3. How do things go at the DRO--are they generally amenable to visits from genealogists? Now, the following is available from the Family History Center library: FHC GRO-Belfast GRO-Dublin Birth Indices for all of Ireland 1864-1921 1864-1921 1864-1921 Birth Indices for the Republic of Ireland 1922-1958 1922-on Birth Indices for Northern Ireland 1922-1959 1922-1996 Birth Returns for all of Ireland 1864-1880, 1900-1914 1864-? (NI only) 1864-1921 Birth Returns for the Republic of Ireland 1930-1955 1922-on Birth Returns for Northern Ireland 1922-1959 1864 on Death Indices for all of Ireland 1864-1921 1864-1921 1864-1921 Death Indices for the Republic of Ireland 1922-1958 1922-on Death Indices for Northern Ireland 1922-1959 1922-1996 Death Returns for all of Ireland 1864-1870 1864-? (NI only) 1864-1921 Death Returns for the Republic of Ireland 1922-on Death Returns for Northern Ireland 1922-1959 1864 on Marriage Indices for all of Ireland 1845-1921 1845-? (NI only?) 1845-1921 Marriage Indices for the Republic of Ireland 1922-1958 1922-on Marriage Indices for Northern Ireland Marriage Returns for all of Ireland 1845-1870 1845 on (NI only?) 1845-1921 Marriage Returns for the Republic of Ireland 1922-on Marriage Returns for Northern Ireland 1922-1959 1922 on (NI only?) Now, I realize this is all very complicated--but my question to the group is: do I have it right?? Returns from the GRO-Dublin are priced at L 1.50 or abt $2.75 each. FHC films are $4.00 where I live with $ .20 /copy. The GRO-Belfast charges L 10.00 or $18.00. My conclusion is thus: Use the Family History Center for all searches unless you can get to Salt Lake City, or the GRO-Belfast. Use the GRO-Belfast or the GRO-Dublin to fill in the 1880-1900 and 1914-1930 Birth indices gaps. Buy returns for Republic ancestors from the GRO-Dublin, and order films from the FHC for the Northern Ireland relatives. How's that??? Regards from Sunny Florida George S. Gilliland

    3. Hi George, You have a lot of questions but let me tell you what happened to me last summer when I went to the GRO in Dublin. I also had a good size list I amassed at my local FHL here in CT. when I went. And when I got to the GRO I was told I could only get copies of 7 records per day. Luckily my cousin was with me so I got 14. I didn't see a big advantage in going there as apposed to sending for the records by mail. They are relatively inexpensive and I wasn't going to spend more than one day of my vacation in a small hot crowded room! You don't get to look at it first to see if it is your family. You pay first, then get the copy of the record. One advantage of getting it there as apposed to by mail is that they may be able to decipher a copy that is poor quality. Now this is for records dating 1864 to 1914. Can't say what to do for later records. I won't be ordering expensive copies from Belfast at present! Hope this helps Mary in CT, USA ----- Original Message ----- From: "George Gilliland" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Thursday, May 26, 2005 5:14 PM Subject: B/m/d indices and returns!!!! > Dear Listers, > > Here's my problem.
