Hi List, I wonder if sks could check out two addresses for me please in the 1901 census of Belfast (number 6?)? 47 M(i/e)lford Street, hopefully finding a McAL(L)ISTER family there, James head, a labourer and possibly a William too! 58 McDONNELL St for a family of MURPHYs, , head Terance, a shoemaker. Straw clutching again, having just received a marriage certificate. Would 'winder' have been an occupation for a spinster of 1895? Kindest regards, Michael McAllister
Hi Michael, Sorry I can't help with the 1901 census look up. However, I can tell you that a winder would have been an occupation for either sex but mostly female. The winder wound the yarn onto the bobbins in readiness for weaving linen. At least that what it was all about when I was a child. I don't think it altered much for many years until the demise of the linen industry in Ireland. Kind Regards. Dear Jean, many thanks for the information on 'winder'. I did have a very slight incling as to what it may have to do with, but needed to make sure.
