Apologies to the list owner and my fellow listers for this being slightly off-topic. Although it is a genealogical enquiry within the Belfast area. I am trying to contact Doreen Walker. Does anyone have her current e-mail address please? The e-mail address I have for her is not active any more. Many thanks in anticipation. The Northern Whig ceased publication in 1963. You can see copies in the Newspaper Library in Belfast. Some libraries also have copies on Microfilm. I have placed lists of STRONG names and addresses in Belfast on my website in the hope relatives might contact me. These names came from the Belfast 1900 Directory, 1901 Belfast Census, Ulster Covenant of 1912, 1912 Belfast Newsletter Directory. See my page: http://www.strong-family.org/strongs/appendices_2.html One contact has a Taylor STRONGE as one of her male Belfast ancestors. One of mine is called John Taylor STRONG. Where did this unusual name come from? Was Taylor a Scot-Irish hero... or some other historical figure important to Belfast? On the other hand, was it just a first name? - - - - - - - - - - - - **Philip Strong**Email:plstrong@pnc.com.au**Blue Mountains, Australia** Interest:STRONG(E)s of Drumbo,Knocknagoney,Belfast Ireland early 1800's then New Zealand and Australia after 1875. Patsy, The Public Records Office (PRONI) should have them, and I think the Belfast Central Library may have some early ones. Dear Adrienne - I see from past emails that you are already in touch with Andy. He certainly has much, much more information than I have. The trouble is that it is such a common name in Belfast and indeed N. Thank you Rosemary Joan. I hadn't had any luck with my Google searching for this location. Thank you also for identifying the churches in the area. I've found a possible sighting of an ancestor in the Freeholders - Poll Book for Belfast 1832-37. This is Thomas HODGEN in ROBERT STREET. Does anyone know where this street may have been or still is? I'd like to identify churches in the area so I can look for any possible church records to help unlock the mysteries of this family. Thanks. Bev in Australia
Robert Street became Exchange Street according to various websites, and looking at the 1920 map of Belfast was just behind St. Anne's cathedral (C of I). St. Patrick's R.C. church wasn't far away. Hi Tony, PRONI have microfilmed records from St Anne's, but that's not the best source for you for this period. Don't write to the church either. They've better things to do caring for their living congregation than chasing around for us amateur genealogists. See GRONI for certificates, but note what it says on the following page; http://www.groni.gov.uk/index.htm Protestant Marriages were officially registered from 1st April 1845, so you can obtain a marriage certificate copy from the General Registry Office of Ireland, see; http://www.groireland.ie/ The Republic may be cheaper, but in my experience, if you have the details, Belfast is quicker. The Ulster Historical Foundation indexes may be helpful, but I've found them infuriatingly expensive and incomplete, see; http://www.ancestryireland.com/index.php Good luck with your quest. I live in Wilmington, Delaware, USA and am researching my husband's grandfather's family, BEATTIE and his grandmother, said to be Helen WAUGH, b. Belfast, who married Henry Osborne BEATTIE, b. Rathfriland. They were married in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA in 1892. Would like particularly to trace Helen Waugh, as no parents names are given anywhere in the records I've found so far. Gentle Listers, Was I lucky? I don't know. In 2005 my wife and I visited St. Anne's. I took a number of photos and I mentioned to one of the . . . ushers I suppose you could call them, that my grandfather was baptized there. He asked me if I was from America and I said yes. He then escorted me down to the basement (a very convoluted route) and got to a vault. On the walls were rows of books. The parish registers. One gentleman opened the book for 1886 and showed me my grandfather's entry. Priceless. When asked, one of the gentlemen told me they do not allow researchers to go through the books because some were tearing pages out of the register books. Too bad for me because I could spend a week there looking up family members. Andy
