Hi Kirsten I think it highly probable that "Ashvale" was the name of the house rather than a Street name. Philip, I'm not sure whether you have had any replies, but I would recomend Brendan Anderson biography of Joe Cahill. Hello, My great-grandfather, John Thompson, was a coach painter. My mother remembers him either owning or working at a Livery Stable on Brown's Square on the Shankill. She also said he owned the original Magnet Store on Peter's Hill on the Shankill. I don't know how acurate my Mother's recollections are but I would like to find out more information. Would anone who is familiar with the area know anything about these places? Thank you for any help. Pauline Canada
I would like to read more about every day life in Belfast and the republican vs unionist troubles 1950 - 2000. I found Gerry Adams' book "Before the Dawn" fascinating and moving. However, could someone suggest the title of a similarly autobiographical book, which deals with the same time frame, but from the opposing unionist viewpoint? -- **Philip Strong**Email:plstrong@pnc.com.au**Blue Mountains, Australia** Interest:STRONG(E)s of Drumbo,Knocknagoney,Belfast Ireland early 1800's then New Zealand and Australia after 1875. Hi List Would any lister know if in 1943 was the two subject streets one in the same. My reason is in Eddie Connelly's new extracts there is a death in Jun 1943 for a Mary Ann Gray wife of Samuel Gray at 17 Meenan Street. Prior to my grandmother's death in Jan 1926 she received a post card from a Mrs Semple of 17 Upper Meenan Street. On the post card a Sam is mentioned. I always thought that Sam was Sam Semple. Thank you for any help. Glen Alderson Calgary Alberta
Thanks Ediie.....it sure looks like the right Robert! Handwriting is close, too! Regards, Joe </HTML>

Hi Rosemary Well... It appears that the site was a demo and a work in progress and they didn't like people using it yet so they pulled it. :( On a positive note though... I have been told many of the directories have gone for rescanning as the quality of some of the images were not up to scratch. I look forward to it going live again... hopefully with a much improved search facility :) I think its gonna be a case of keep an eye on the PRONI website for an announcement...
