    3. Andy I am reading the following book by Andrew Boyd. 'Fermenting Elements: The Labour Colleges inIreland 1924-1964. ( 1999) ISBN: 1902912004. On page 39 he writes :' Ida Boyd was a remarkable woman, a socialist pioneer in the city of Belfast. She joined the Belfast branch of the Independent Labour Party when she was a girl of sixteen and through time could include Keir Hardie, founder of the Labour Party, David Kirkwood, William Walker, Jimmy Maxtonand others of that generation of Socialists among her best and closest friends. Ida was an accomplished public speaker and at the Customs House Steps, the Hyde Park Corner of Belfast, she often had to deal with hecklers who thought it 'indecent' for a woman to be haranguing the public from a political platform. She stood in several Belfast city municipal elections as a Labour candidate but never got elected.' Any connection? 3. Happy New Year Brian and everyone on the Belfast List. Brian I am interested in your posting for MAGEE for years I have been looking for my 2x great grandmother Mary MAGEE born circa 1837 Belfast. She married James HANNAH born circa 1835 Belfast. I have no idea when they married or how they came to England but they ended up in Bentham Yorkshire England. Some of their life was spent in Egremont Cumbria and eventually they moved to Skipton where they ended their days. Mary died in 1894 and James in 1918. Other than their children I know nothing else about them. I wonder does my Mary fit in with any of your MAGEE's? With hind sight I think we may have spoken before! Kind Regards Denise in a very cold Scotland brian magaoidh wrote: > Happy New Year to everyone on the list and here are some of the Belfast names I am looking for: > > > MAGEE (Pound Loney & New Lodge area)) > SAVAGE (Falls Road) > McCAIGHY (Falls Rd & Short Strand) > MADDEN(Pinkerton St) > CORR (Pinkerton St) > VALLELY(Short Strand) > > > > Brian Magaoidh > http://ulster.failteromhat.com/ > > > > --------------------------------- > Sent from Yahoo! - a smarter inbox. > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to IRL-BELFAST-CITY-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message > >

    3. Brian, I've read "Holy War in Belfast" by Mr. Boyd. I loved it. Don't know about Ida, don't have her yet. I have a picture of a person I suspect is a Boyd, but cannot identify him. He looks to be fairly well off, unlike all the other Boyds I have. 3. Derek, I believe that many, even journeyman, researchers do not know that Islandmagee is not really an island, and that hundreds of years ago the McGees/Magees of that area were attacked and nearly wiped out. I never heard why they were attacked. Perhaps you have some updated information about those points. 1. [BELFAST] Deeds relating to residents of this county
    2. Sharon Oddie Brown
    3. Since the beginning of December, I have annotated and footnoted 22 deeds relating to property transactions involving dozens (if not more than a hundred) people in Co. Armagh, Tyrone, Monaghan, Down, Louth, and the cities of Dublin & Belfast. I won't list the names of the people on the leases here - there are too many. However, I have refined my methods of posting so when you troll down the list of "What's New" you can see at a glance a list of names and townlands and can then quickly see if any touch your area of interest. For hyperlinks to each deed, SEE: http://www.thesilverbowl.com/misc/whatsnew.htm If you find errors, or if you have additional information that might amplify what we all learn by sharing, then I am all ears. I have been having problems with broken links, so if any are discovered, please let me know. It is the fastest way for me to set them straight. And I will get them ASAP. So, that's it for me until after Xmas. 3. Thanks Brian for your suggestion, but Joe Cahill was the Belfast commander of the IRA. I would like to read a biographical book which tells us about every day life in Belfast from the opposing Unionist point of view, to get a balanced picture. I am reminded about the Basil Fawlty sketch where he was told "whatever you do, don't talk about the war". However, I am writing in a genuine spirit of enquiry.
