    1. West Belfast Familes 1911on the Internet
    2. brian magaoidh
    3. Hi all, I have just come back from an enjoyable talk given by Eddine Khaoury from the School of History in Queens University, Belfast. He is involved in a project whereby the details of 1911 Census pertaining to West Belfast may soon be on the internet. I have copied part of the blurb from the Queens site, which can be found at: http://www.qub.ac.uk/schools/SchoolofHistory/Research/MajorResearchProjects/ Description of Project The details of every household in Belfast early this century are available in the census records in National Archives in Dublin. ...These census forms are a unique source for individuals exploring family histories as well as for local history groups and others, .. Among the wider issues illuminated by these records are people's occupations, age at marriage, family size, migration into Belfast from the countryside, levels of education, and the extent to which different religious groups lived side by side. ....The project offers a window on life in West Belfast in the years before the Great War and Partition. The major sources are the census returns for Belfast in 1901 and 1911, supplemented by photographs and street maps, as well as contemporary accounts of the lives of the people. The images and information will be placed on a special website, and will also be published in CD-rom form. I am sure everyone will support this project and I am looking forward to it being completed. --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? Better first dates. More second dates. Yahoo! Personals

    1. Re: [BELFAST] Day Trips?
    2. Whew! I'm glad to hear that. I actually did what you're expecting to do. Let me tell you, even if things go PERFECT getting to the library, the old "irish concept of time and US concept of time (not to mention NYC concept of time)" usually kicks in and foils any attempts to get something done in one day. Just thought you should know that. I parked in the train station in Belfast and took the train down in the morning. I walked over to the library from the Dublin train station, but its a bit of a hike so take a cab. When I did this, the library was just starting on their genealogist advice office so there was a lot of red-tape I had to go through (needlessly)until they sorted things out. Plus, my return trip to Belfast from Dublin went fine, however, the RIRA just happened to call in a bomb hoax so the train behind me was held up for hours in Dublin. That doesn't happen that often anymore. AND the traffic coming out of the Belfast train station parking lot makes grid lock in NYC pale in comparison. It took me one hour to get out of that lot. 1. Day Trips to Dublin
    2. Dr. Jane Lyons
    3. Bonz - you want to take in the National Librqary and some parish records in Dublin..............?? My advice would be to travel down on the train. I wouldn't have a clue as to deatils *but* there's more than likely a train that will leave Belfast about 7a.m and another about 9 a.m. My guess is that it takes an hour to get from there to here (based on how long it takes to drive to Belfast). You would end up in what we call Amien street station - from there, you could take a DART to Pierce street, get off, walk out the main door, go to the left as you come out, up the road a bit, round the corner to your right hand side - another corner going left and another - take the right. Five minutes up that road you come to the one that the Nat. Lib is on (can't remember the name right now!!!!) - take a left, go up there and Bob's your Uncle. You'd be in the National library 15-20 minutes (max.) after you get off your train from Belfast, depending on how fast you walk Reading through your mail here though, I'm getting confused. You speak of taking the bus down to Dublin on the Saturday - adn then you ask about bus tours on a Sunday. So.............I'm talking about Saturday only - the NL in Dublin is closed on Sunday. If it's travellig to Dublin on Sat you mean and wondering about your mopther on the Sat and seeing Dublin after you've done that bit of research - then you should take one of the city bus tours - they're hop on and hop off. You pick them up where you want to, get off where you want to and get back on where you got off. They take a few hours overall - you don't have to do the ful tour and you could head back to the train station for whatever train you need to get back to Belfast that suits you. 3. Hello list After all these years, four to be precise, I have finally discovered the name of my Great-grandmother. A couple of weeks ago I found an old listing, since then I have been in touch with a second cousin in Australia. a lot of information has changed hands nearly all one way, from Australia to me. The names we have for our great Grandparents are Alexander Moore & Maria McCaughan, who we believe married circa 1875-79, we believe in Belfast, maybe even Scotland, as Alexander spent some time in Ayrshire. When Alexander returned to Belfast he spent some time working as a Clerk for Milligan's Coal. The children were Allan. B.1879 - D.1914. Katherine (Annie B, circa 1880. - D 1960 married John W Bailey. Fred. B 1887. married twice. Alexander? B.1878. Margaret (Maggie) B.1889.married Gordon Hamill. Sarah (Daisy) B.1893.- married Howard Cooke. finally Minnie have yet to find her correct birth year who moved to Australia and married Alfred L Smith. Does anyone recognise these names or could pin point the marriage for me. Regards Richard On a sunny Isle of Wight -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Anti-Virus. Are there any small day bus tours leaving from Belfast on a Sunday and returning? I looked at UlsterBus, but they have very few Sunday trips and none in May. Renting a car isn't an option for this trip. I could take a train if needs be. The trip would probably be started in the morning and we would need to be back by the evening. Thanks for any tips on where to go and what to see. Please respond off-list so the administrator doesn't hurt me. :D Bonz [email protected]

    2. Can anyone advise me on marriage licences in 1900 in Ireland please? I have searched for the marriage of my grandparents Elizabeth Bowden and William Moore for many years now without success. I am beginning to think that they may have married on board a ship as my grandmother did go to NZ in 1891 and stayed for several years. I have been advised that to marry on board a ship one must have a marriage licence. Or if they got married in some small church in Ireland Should this be the case, where would I look for a copy of the marriage licence please? Any advise would be very gratefully received. 2. Brian, I'm a bit confused with the death notice for CHARLOTTE MARTIN I know that Carnmoney is just outside of Belfast but does the notice mean that they had the church service there or is Charlotte buried there and not in the City Cemetery? I have been told that the family went to St Aidans my dad remembers walking there on Sundays with his grandma, so I can't figure out why they would go to a church in Carnmoney. Also the notice said she was a nurse my dad told me she was a midwife is there anywhere I can check to see if she was in fact a nurse? Any suggestions anyone? Cathie

    2. Kathleen Donnelly
    3. Muriel, there are death indexes on micro film at your nearest Family Search Library. They start around 1864 (I believe). On each year of death the names and places are listed. If you know the year you are in free!!!!
