    3. Hello Glen Thank you so much for your kind offer, even though it wasn't possible in the end! Robert and Elizabeth married in Sheffield and I have their marriage certificates which is where I got father John's name from. It will have to be PR's to find a marriage for John WALKER and unknown spouse, I suppose. Thanks very much indeed again for your help and very kind offer. Regards - Ann Hunt, Oakerthorpe, Derbyshire > I was in a little rush. 2. Dear Brian, Thank you for your e-mail and for the two web site addresses. What a great idea. I will include the URLS with the next batch of photos I put on my web site. There is always the chance that somebody will find the photos and web site addresses of help to them with their research. Thanks again. It was very thoughtful of you to send the web sites to me. Best wishes. Jean McCarthy nee Moore http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~jeanmccarthy36/

    1. Robert James WALKER
    2. Ann Hunt
    3. Hello List I am searching for the origins of my great grandfather Robert James WALKER, born in Belfast on 29th September 1854 and I would be grateful for some pointers as to where to look.. He went to Sheffield, Yorkshire sometime after 1871 (or he missed the 1871 census). He married Mary Ann SLATER in 1876 in Sheffield. On their marriage certificate Robert's father was named as John Walker, Grocer Robert's sister Elizabeth WALKER, born about 1861, married Mary Ann SLATER's brother Thomas SLATER in Sheffield in 1882. On their marriage certificate Elizabeth's father was named as John Walker, Gentleman. Are there any Grocers' federations or the like, that might have lists of names so I can pinpoint the area of Belfast they came from. I only have their father's name not their mother's name. Though I suspect the mother might possible be Martha as both Robert and Elizabeth named one of their daughters Martha - a name not found in the Slater tree for the past 100 years. Any help would be gratefully received. Regards - Ann in Oakerthorpe, Derbyshire, England

    3. Jane, Is a passport essential or will another form of I.D., such as an electoral card, do? I may try and get to Dublin sometime this year for a first time visit to NAI etc and would hate to be turned away for not having proper I.D. Thanks Brian "Dr. Jane Lyons" <[email protected]> wrote: You need to have your passport with you when you visiti the NAI or NLI in orer to get a readers ticket - and best to have a passport sized photo for the NLI, unless you wil only be there for one day - then you'll probably get a day pass. --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? 2. Dr. Jane Lyons
    3. Dana, You can view the 1901 and 1911 census for Belfast in Dublin at the National Archives. The census is not indexed by surname - so you need to know which streets you want to look at. Jean McCarthy has an index on line that deals mainly with the surname she is interested in Moore - but, other people have also contributed their transcripts of either Belfast census to her web site. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~jeanmccarthy36/ I have a bit of an index currently on line http://www.from-ireland.net/censabstracts/ant/1901/belfast/a/astreets.htm will lead you to the beginning - I think I only have A and B streets on line so far, I should have more before the end of this month. Jean and I both have search engines on our sites, so, you can use those to check your surname. Belfast directories - then you need to pay a visit to the National Library. You need to have your passport with you when you visiti the NAI or NLI in orer to get a readers ticket - and best to have a passport sized photo for the NLI, unless you wil only be there for one day - then you'll probably get a day pass. You'll also be able to get photocopies of any BMD (CIVIL not parish) records for Belfast pre 1922 at the GRO in Dublin. Roman Catholic parish records - the National Library - NLI Chuirch of Ireland records - the NAtional Archives NAI or else the Chrurch Representative Body Library in Churchtown. Pre 1922 - outside of estate records, you'll probably find most of what is in Belfast in Dublin - somewhere. I am visiting Dublin next month and plan to spend time doing some research. To be 100% clear before I go, I thought I'd ask the group two questions... 1. Can I view 1901/1911 Census records for Belfast at the National Archives? 2. Where would be the best place in Dublin to go through Belfast City Directories (possibly some for Glasgow) say 1890 to 1940? If viewing these records proves to be problematic, I might be able to swing a day trip to Belfast. But staying in Dublin would be ideal. I'm looking for Belfast records (Falls Road area).

    3. Hi Jean, I was in Belfast last summer and took a picture of St. Mary's R C church. How do I send it to you, as an attachment? I have never been able to find any pictures of it on line, so I made a point of getting this shot when I was there. I believe it was built it 1784, so it may be the oldest R C church in Belfast. Please let me know the procedure.
