You pretty much need to know the street you are looking for within the parish in order to be certain to get the right FHL film number. If you have a local FHC, the staff will likely be able to help you get the right film number. If not you can attempt to find it on line from the LDS catalogue. It can be tricky. If you have a street name go to Jean McCarthy website as she has listings for most of the 1901 Wards and Streets in an index format. Her website is as follows. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~jeanmccarthy36/ Hope this helps Al Valentine Canada ----- Original Message ----- From: "kaz campling" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, September 11, 2005 1:01 PM Subject: [BELFAST] shankhill parish > Hiya everyone, I am hoping that sks would be able to help me with the 1901 census for the Shankhill Parish, or any other census I will be very grateful for any help or information. > Thankyou in advance. > Karen > > > ==== IRL-BELFAST-CITY Mailing List ==== > The 'Subject' line of your e-mail will be the first thing others see, so make it stand out and relevant to your post. > > ============================== > Jumpstart your genealogy with OneWorldTree. Hiya everyone, I am hoping that sks would be able to help me with the 1901 census for the Shankhill Parish, or any other census I will be very grateful for any help or information. Thankyou in advance. Karen
Beautiful pics. Brought back memories of my trip last spring. I so want to go back to Belfast. I didn't have enough time. I hope to go next year, if not, the year after. I'm starting to save for it. I saw that there were troubles last night. Rather sad. Mom and I had both picked on the underlying tension in the city when there in May, and we were "felt out" in conversations with the lovely people as to where our sympathies lay. (I have both Protestant and Catholic ancestry, and deftly avoided the subject altogether.) But the problems last night reminded me that the tension is never far from the surface. :( I just wish PRONI or the Church of Ireland would let the LDS film more. I worry about record loss due to strife if it refires. Irish research is so difficult from outside of Ireland (I'll refrain from my comments on the very overpriced "Heritage Centres") due to the LAST major record loss. I wonder, is it not wanting to allow access other than there, or does it come down to money issues? Plus it saddens me to see problems in the city that I grew to love in a short time. It was rather depressing to read about the rioting last night. I met so very many friendly people there. For that alone, I can't wait to go back. Great photos and I didn't have any problem despite not having broadband.
Hello Andy, Just finished looking at the lovely photographs of your trip. What a great keepsake for you!! Thanks for allowing us to see the beautiful country. I have never been there myself but some of my ancestors come from Northern Ireland, Janet New England USA
It was very interesting being there when we were. I did too note some "problems." Bricks in the road one morning following an assault on a police vehicle for example. When we stopped at the bonfire being built our "tour guide", a Catholic, told me, a Catholic whose NI rellies were dyed-in-the-wool Orange, my Catholic wife, and our "other faith" friend, that we should be going from our location because we were "attracting attention." Interesting. Had an interesting conversation with a gent from Dublin yesterday who said that the Protestants should make a deal now while they can. The rapidly growing young Catholic population will guarantee a significant minority population for the Protestants, and if they don't strike the best deal they can now, and the Catholics stick to it, sectarian problems are bound to ensue again, but with a Catholic majority. Police stations there are like jails here, all fortified and all. For those wishing a historical perspective on the issue, I'd recommend "The Holy War in Belfast" by Andrew Boyd. I found it most interesting. http://cgi.ebay.com/Holy-War-In-Belfast-Northern-Ireland-History_W0QQitemZ4574983215QQcategoryZ378QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem Don't everybody go bidding at once now. If anyone can recommen other books on the subject, I'd be interested to compile a list. Andy Airriess
Thank you Andy for sharing your wonderful pictures, what a great experience. Always wanted to go and see where my McShefferys came from, but now, age has changed that plan. But, you with all those great pictures have taken me there. Can you imagine back in the 1850's, Hugh McSheffery, a Roman Catholic married Margaret J. Rodgerson, a Protestant ???? What a challenge to raise their seven sons. I have dial up, had no trouble, but we have one phone line, so, I will have to stay up late some night and go over your wonderful adventure in pictures again. Congratulations on your "25th Anniversary" !!! Kind regards Lois W.

Andy, My apologies. Now I can't duplicate the 'concern'! It occured when I left clicked on an image to enlarge it. Perhaps it was just a gremlin! Sorry to bother you. Dave
Andy, I wonder if one of the links got labeled wrong. There are some nice shots of St. Anne's but, if you enlarge them, it says St. Malachy's. Since my ancestors were married in St. Malachy's, I was curious. Dave BELFAST - Quin, Barr Co.CLARE - McMahon, Liddy Co. Wexford - Sinnott, Murray
Dave, Could you please be a little more explicit? I'm wondering just where you see the label "St Malachy's, at the top of the screen, when you right-click to save the image . . . ? ----- Original Message ----- From: "Dave Spang" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, September 11, 2005 6:51 AM Subject: Re: [BELFAST] Belfast Photos online > Andy, > > I wonder if one of the links got labeled wrong. Andy, What wonderful photos....the ones of Belfast brought back some good memories of our trip. Thanks for sharing them. Happy belated 25th anniversary. M Derry, Toronto
Listers, My wife and I were in Belfast this summer as part of our vacation to the old country. I've made a wee web site with the photos we took on the trip. They include some images not typically seen. For example, I made an 8-image panorama from a hillside on the NW of town. Another is of the parking lot where a family home once stood. Many of the photos are family-specific, and they also include some pictures of the WONDERFUL people that made the trip so special. Some did not want their pictures shown for privacy sake. There are Belfast pictures, as well as pictures of some of the surrounding places like the Giant's Causeway, Downpatrick, and one of our favorite towns, Armagh. Some of London and environs are on the site too. There are some of our favorite places we didn't get pictures of, like Clonard, but we'll have to save them for another trip I suppose. Instructions for viewing the images are on the screen. I hope you like them and that they give you a sense of the town, if you are unfortunate enough not to visit and enjoy the tremendous hospitality the locals provide. Please offer your comments and suggestions. I know what I like, but as I expand the site I want to make sure everyone finds it easy to use. I'll be adding some photos in the near future, but didn't want to wait putting up the site any longer. If you have a broadband connection, you are in good shape. If you have a dialup connection, I suggest some supplementary reading material. http://www.airriess.net/assets/2005Vacationindex.htm Andy Airriess

Gentle listers, Went down to the convention this weekend and found this out about the LDS Film Indices going online: Microfilm will be going away. It will take a while, but all the 2,200,000 rolls of film in the FHL are being digitized and volunteers will be using a very nice interface to enter the text on images into a database. The whole thing will eventually be available online. This is how it will work: People sign up to be volunteers. The work will be divided up into blocks where one block will take the average mortal about 35 minutes to complete. Jane will take about 6.37 minutes to complete one block. You access their interface over the Internet where you can accept blocks of work to complete. You can decide if you want to work on US census, Griffiths, Norwegian adoption, or Latvian wills. You can even mix and match. In the interface, the digitized document is in the upper part of the screen. In the lower part of the screen you have a tabular entry area with column headings that match the document you are working on. There are text areas of the screen with tips to help you complete your work. With a highlight bar in the upper section of the window that displays the image you are indexing, you highlight the record you are working on to make it easier to focus. You can rotate the image and do other useful things to it like zoom in or out. In the tabular area at the bottom you type into the provided boxes the text from the image of the record in the upper part of the screen. The one demonstrated to me was from the Boston (USA) census of 1860. The usual cut-and-paste options are available, but I'm not sure if type ahead works. So you complete your work block and submit it. You can then take on the next block of Singaporean snake handler licensing records to work on. All in all it looks very easy to work on, and they have made it easy to work in manageable segments. What gets completed first depends on what people want to work on. When it gets completed depends on the number of volunteers and the number of hours worked. One thing I can tell you, it won't be ready a week from Tuesday. Even if they complete 200,000 rolls of film a year (5,480 a day) it will take 11 years to complete just their existing inventory. In the future you will be able to get on the Internet and query for "John Smith" and "Ballymacarrett" and find lists of those who eschewed lures while fishing (the ones with pro bait records). The images will appear on screen and you can copy them, download them, whatever you like. Pretty slick. If you have specific questions, please ask, but I'm not sure I'll be able to answer. I have a photographic memory, but it's not very well developed. Andy Airriess McCormick, Boyd, Shaw, Ireland, Ball, and Peace in Belfast.
I am new to the list and thought I would let you know my Belfast interests. I am researching James Wilson who was a carrier in Belfast. His daughter Hannah (sometimes Mary Ann) married William Gellie around 1840/41 in Belfast. In August 1841 William and Hannah boarded the Marquis of Bute at Greenock, Scotland and travelled to Melbourne, Australia to start a new life. Hannah was only 18 years of age when she came to Australia. I would like to find out more about James Wilson and his business as family legend is that James Wilson felt that his daughter married below her "station" as William Gellie was employed as a driver for the family. James sent money to Hannah in Australia but this immediately stopped when whe died in 1863. I would also like to find Hannah Wilson and William Gellie's marriage records but I am told that Presbyterian Church records are in local custody. Where to I go from here? Any help is greatly appreciated. Jan Vernon Sydney, Australia
