Not sure if this helps but when I have been going through Australian shipping lists even members of the same family travelling together gave a variety of answers to the question of their religion. One family in particular had several members (siblings and cousins) and their wives and children and although most said "Presbyterian" some said "Church of Scotland" and others "Protestant".
