    1. [IRL-ANTRIM] Religion
    2. Hello Listers, It's great to see all of the activity lately. Pardon my ignorance but I need to ask. I was raised Roman Catholic. I asked my father what his father was raised and he told me Protestant. I have reading a lot on the list about the Presbyterians. Which is more prevelant in Northern Ireland? Is it the Presbyterians that are connected to the Church of Ireland? My maiden name is LOAN. I have a torn copy of my supposed great, great grandfather's Naturalization Paper from Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, Ohio, USA. Apparently he could not write as there is an X on the signature line and someone wrote out his name as JOHN LONE. My Aunt tells me that the family was from Londonderry but noone like to mention London so they all said Derry. She also states that the family name used to be O'LOANE and the O was dropped and then the E. I found a site that has an old form of the name as O'LUANE or O'LUAIN, the english version being LAMB. I have no other papers and no proof of where this family is from. I am having a hard time tracing any family. My grandfather, Charles LOAN has been gone since 1975, he was born in Cleveland, Ohio in 1900. There is a possibility that there may be some Scottish on his father's side. If anyone can clarify my religion questions it would be a big help. If you have ever come across the LOAN/LONE name I would love to hear from you. Thank you, Denise S.

    3. Hi Denise. Ireland north and south were historically (and still are) majorially Catholic. Presbyterians (several faiths) are more closely associated with the churches of England and Ireland. As with everywhere we look, there are many exceptions. 3. Hi Denise, I can't help you with most of this...but I thought it interesting that you said: "My Aunt tells me that the family was from Londonderry but noone like to mention London so they all said Derry." My father was named "Dermont Arlington" (anyone know the origin of "Arlington?), and his father's middle name was "Dermont", and his grandfather's name was "Dermont Arlington". Does anyone know the origination of "Dermont" as a name? And I know that my father was called "Derry" (instead of Dermont) by everyone when he was growing up (anyone who knew him as a baby/boy/young adult knew im as "Derry", but professionally he went by "Del", which is what my mother always called him). I had been told his grandfather, whom he was named after, was "Big Derry" and he was "Little Derry." He was always "Dad" and "Del" to me. I just was prompted by this email to comment on that, since I had always wondered. As far as I can tell, my father's side hailed from Antrium, Ulster, Ireland (he is a descendent of Andrew REED and Jane MURRAY REED) circa 1730-ish (if anyone knows more, please, fill me in, because that's really all I know, except that they ended up in Townsend, Lincoln, Maine (later Boothbay, Maine). In what seems a strange co-incidence, my father's mother's side (McLaughlin's) seem to have come from Coleraine, Ireland, on the ship "Hercules", in 1634 (though I haven't been able to proof-positive that yet), and that's only 25-30 miles from Antrium (maybe 40 kilometers?), and 100 years earlier...To the best of my knowledge, the ancestor that came over on that ship was George McLaughlin, or possibly his father, Phillip McLaughlin. In what might be, if it all pulls together, an even stranger co-incidence, that ship was partially owned (so I've heard) by a Hatch, and his family sailed with him on that voyage...and my mother is a Hatch, and they have been here a "very long time", but I can't confirm anything. I'm willing to bet a number of people who read this will either be able to confirm or deny any of these speculations...if anyone can, anything that gets me further to the true history is appreciated!!! :-) Thanks so much!!! -David Reed David (me!) / Dermont Arlington Reed / Clifton Dermont Reed / Dermont Arlington Reed / David Alvin Reed / Washington Reed / David Reed / Joseph Reed / Andrew Reed ------------------------------- -----Original Message----- From: irl-antrim-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:irl-antrim-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of DSNJ004@aol.com Sent: Tuesday, November 14, 2006 2:30 PM To: irl-antrim@rootsweb.com Subject: [IRL-ANTRIM] Religion Hello Listers, It's great to see all of the activity lately. 3. Denise, I've read some of the responses to your question and would like to add (correct) a few items. The Presbyterian Church and the Church of Ireland are two separate and distinct Protestant denominations with significant organizational and theological differences. Some Presbyterians prefer the use of the word Restoration to Reformation when referring to the great movement, although technically it is a Reformation Church. The Presbyterian Church was originally known as the Church of Scotland. The name was changed for a more universal appeal/application. Our Johnston/e family goes back to the Church of Scotland. The British Crown at one time discriminated against both the Roman Catholic and Presbyterian Churches in Ireland so that a rather peculiar situation arose. Religious Presbyterian Scots who went to Ireland became C. of I. members to avoid the discrimination (as reportedly did a very few Roman Catholics), but they quietly returned to Scotland and the Presbyterian Church for important events such as baptisms, marriages, etc.. Such was the case with our Johnston/e family. My ggggrandfather was born in Scotland, went to Ireland, married and had children in Ireland. Our oral family history indicates that the whole family would go through the expected religious ceremonies at the local C. of I. Church in Ireland and then go back to Scotland and a Presbyterian Church for second baptisms, marriages (love is better the second time around?...lol..., etc.. The net result is a real nightmare for any of my family trying to trace our "roots". Others have the same problem too. As for which denomination has how many members - check out the census records or whatever is available. My understanding was that the Protestants were in the majority in Northern Ireland, but that the Roman Catholics were "catching up"...dunno for certain. Cliff.
