    3. I am replying to 2 previous messages in this one e-mail rather than repeat myself to Bill & Lida Bill, although you have Patterson being used as a first name, are you aware of it being a family surname in another of your family lines, hence the reason for the unual first name ? Lida, you will see my reason for responding to your Jackson querie here too. My Gt Gt Grandfather James Kennedy born Layd, Antrim 1809 joined the British East India Company in 1829, went to Calcutta, India with his wife Susan ( surname unknown ). James & Susan had 2 children Mary Ann Pattison Kennedy, ( b. 1831 & d. ?? ) & George Jackson Kennedy ( b. 1834 & d. 1835) & when Susan also died in 1835, James married Susan Adam the widow of another soldier & they had James Higginson Kennedy b. 1840 & d. 1905 in New Zealand ) & David Black(e) Kennedy ( b. 1842 & d. 1897. ) Although I have found information about James' time in India & the family's emigration to Castlemaine, Victoria, Australia c 1852, I feel that maybe Mary Ann may have died in India too, as I find no evidence of her being in Australia. James Higginson & David both came to NZ to fight in the Land Wars in 1863, with David going back to Australia to go Gold Prospecting & he died at sea after being taken from New Guinea in ill health. I have often wondered why the names such as Pattison, Jackson, Higginson & Black(e) were used as second christian names for these children & can only imagine that they may have been family surnames from the mother's line or grandmother's lines of either parent. If either of you have any Kennedy references in your research I would love to follow this further with you. After 23 years of research I am still trying to find that parents of James b. 1809, & have recently learnt of a James Kennedy being born 7th April 1809 at Knocknacully, Layd Parish, County Antrim, son of David Kennedy and Peggy McGennell & hope that I might find proof that this is my Great Grandfather & his parents. Welcome your comments.
