    3. Cliff: It is believed that James Johnston was one of the very first to arrive and settle in Franklin Co., Pa. (then it was part of Lancaster Co.). He held a Blunston license issued in 1733, but it covered a prior arrival and claim to land date as much as 3 years or more. This came about when Lord Penn died, his sons Thomas, John, and Richard were for some reason unsure of their legal grounds to continue to sell land and issued deeds, also at that point of time the Penn's hadn't settled with the Indians for that land, so John Blunston (a fellow Quaker & friend of Lord Penn) and his son Samuel issued these Blunston license's which were in effect promissary notes recognizing the settlers prior rights to that parcel of land. While I haven't done a lot of research into the Johnston's, it was a large family, some were neighbors to my Crooks ancestors and they were fellow Presbyterians and friends.Blunston was the High Sheriff at the time and thus had some legal standing. 3. Gordon, I've moved recently and don't have my regular computer up and running, yet. I'm working off my wife's laptop. I've got a Johnston Family Newsletter that I write every so often, and one of our Johnstons has ancestors from PA. I'll try to get her in touch with you as soon as I can. We have only one requirement for receiving our Johnston Family Newsletter and that is Y-DNA testing confirming an I1c haplogroup or a genealogy connection to one of us who has tested as I1c. I've done this in order to make our genealogy research work more productive/efficient, and it is working for us. Not everyone who contacts me likes it. I've had a Johnston lady in Michigan get very irrate with me and refuse to have her husband test. That's life. We, the I1c Johnston/es, are only a small portion of Clan Johnston/e - something like 3% perhaps. Those of us who are really into this have spent countless untold days chasing red herrings in the past and have found that the Y-DNA test eliminates most of red herring searches now for us - a real blessing! Again, I'd like to encourage you to have a related male Johnston take the Y-DNA test. It will help you/us immeasurably. I can cite a recent case of a Johnston lady in Ireland who thought that she was our kin. A Y-DNA test disproved that much to her and our dismay; however, it did put her in touch with a newfound cousin in the States and has been worth its weight in gold to her. Good hunting, Cliff. 3. Cliff: Actually I would like to connect with a living Johnston in Franklin Co., especially in or around Waynesboro/Shady Grove area. I have a telephone book for the area and there are about 150 Johnsons and about 30 Johnstons. I am not related to the Johnstons in as far as I know what I am doing is looking at the earliest settlers and finding out what is in their records. In this case land warrants and also someone's will indicated to me that the Crooks and Johnstons knew each other and were friends and neighbors. I am going to Chambersburg tomorrow to do research.
