I have a driving licence from 1930 that belonged to one of my ancestors and I am trying to find out more information about his life in Belfast. His name was Samuel Jennings of 81 The Mount, Belfast and his yearly licence was started in July 1929. Each year until 1932 the licence was stamped and renewed. His home address was 81 The Mount, but in 1942 it changed to 83 The Mount, Mount Pottinger, Belfast. Can anyone give me some advice on how to find out more about Samuel. Did he have a family? What was his occupation? Thank you Julie
Hi Julie, The Mount is a square of large mostly victorian houses in Mount Pottinger in East Belfast off the Albertbridge Road. I used to live there in the 1960s when I first went to work in Belfast. Bombing in the 1939-1945 war may have demolished some of those houses leading to a re-numbering of the street when re-built. Indeed, I seem to remember that there are some more modern styles of house there. Our public (census, church, etc) records have a 100 year "confidentiality" period. We are not yet allowed to see the contents of the 1911 census. Maybe telephone directories from the 1930s/40s for Belfast exist. I am sorry that I cannot assist with data concerning your ancestor.
