I have married into this family, and would like a push in the right direction to follow this line in Ireland. The details I have been provided are. John McElroy born 26 March 1837, in Anthrem (Antrim, I figured) County, Ireland. I have no other details about his birth, family and so on. Served in the Civil War in the USA, Company I, 80th Infantry, Illinois volunteers, rank of Private. Was a prisoner of war between 12/1862 to 1/1863. (we have these records). Died in Pilot Know, IL 23 Jun 1897, buried at Oak Grove Cemetery. ~ Family story goes like this.was a member of the Royal Navy at the age of 17 (would be about 1853/4). Deserted in New Orleans, taking a flatboat up the Mississippi River, landing in Grand Tower, Illinois. Later his two sisters joined him. He went to Washington Co. (IL) in 1855 where he acquired land and became a farmer. ~ I don't know who his sisters were, that are mentioned. I would also like a pointer to a county map of the area that would be on-line to view. Andie
Andie I don't know if these will be any help to you but I think they will provide some information for your search. I actually live in N. Ireland and have checked these websites for my own information. Griffiths is still being developed but at least you might be able to home in on a specific area. http://griffiths.askaboutireland.ie/gv4/gv_family_search_form.php I have found this website to be extremely accurate bearing in mind it was developed by a man in New Zealand http://ireland.kiwicelts.com/irishMap/ireMap.html I hope this will help you in your quest for more information.
