    3. My apologies for the delay in answering and many thanks, Jean, for solving the mystery of Mary's whereabouts. Thank you also, Rick for your help. I have the book on Antrim gravestones but can't quite make the connection. It would appear that the gravestone for William McCulloch in St. Cedma's is not the one I'm looking for as his mother's name was Janet, not Margaret. But I will follow up on your other suggestions. Valerie, I used a researcher to find John McCalmont's birth date and place as well as his brother and sister's. I was living in Papua New Guinea at the time so that was my only way forward. From there I have traced the family in the 1861, 1871 and 1881 Scotland census, living in Dalry, Ayrshire, using Scotland's People and Ancestry. A Scottish researcher found the deaths in Dalry of William, Jane and James McCalmont and, on a visit to Dalry, I found a List of Deaths in the library on which James had the misfortune to be the only person with the word "pauper' next to his name. I have so far found 24 variations of the spelling of the name "McCalmont". As a new member of this mailing list,I am very happy to have received such a positive response to my query and I thank you all. You do not state where you found this information. This fact is both useful in telling other subscribers a suggestion as to where else for them to look and also telling those that are trying to help what research you have already done. Some are mentioned in Felix McKillop's "History of Larne and East Antrim" There are quite a few of those names in Larne area cemeteries with some families dating back to the 1700s. I don't see an obvious connection to yours just yet. But, here's one that mentions New Zealand : In St Cedma's Cemetery McCulloch Erected by William McCulloch of New Zealand in memory of his father & mother William and Margaret McCulloch of Inver. Also his sister Maggie McCulloch, born May 1862, died aug 1910. The McCalmonts listed in St Cedma's were also connected to the Bridgman, Montgomery, Nickle and Ritchie families, if that means anything to you. The 1881 Larne directory included John McCalmont, merchant,54 Main St. William McMeekin, blacksmith, Pound St (also included in Coal Merchants) James McMeekin, carpenter, Ballycarry Mrs Jane McCullough, Clonlee, (listed under Gentry) The 1846 Larne directory shows: William McCalmont, printer You might want to visit Liam McFall's Co Antrim site at www.irishgenealogy.net Liam is from the Larne area and there is much emphasis on the Larne area. Good luck Rick Hutton ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ -------Original Message------- From: Randhir Varma Date: 3/14/2008 4:47:13 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [IRL-ANTRIM] McCalmont Inver/Larne, McCullough, McMeekin Does anyone know of a McCalmont family with links to Inver, Larne? My great grandfather, John McCalmont, was born 15 January 1854 and baptised in 1st Larne Presbyterian Church. His parents were James McCalmont and Jane McCullough and he had a brother William, born 6 September 1848 and a sister, Mary, born 12 April 1846. His grandparents on his mother's side were William McCullough and Janet McMeekin and she had a brother, John (this from Jane's death certificate). The family moved to Ayrshire in the 1850's where James, Jane and William McCalmont died. John went to New Zealand and I cannot find Mary, his sister. I would also like to trace the McCulloughs and McMeekins. I know that John McCalmont had 2 McCullough cousins, one named William who I believe went to New Zealand with him and the other is possibly John. Any help would be gratefully received.
