Cliff You are going to have to wait until possibly May. The chap that has this tree is going away on holidays and won't be back until the end of April. He told me that he would be in touch then. Do you happen to get Ancestry.com. If so it is in there. I can view it but cannot copy it. Lyn from Manitoba ----- Original Message ----- From: "Cliff. So far have just found the family in the 1851 census for Canada West, Carelton Co., Goucester. It names the father as James born Ireland age 53. These are the children listed and appears no wife. 1. James Jr. age 24; 2. William age 19; 3. Robert age 17; 4. Soloman age 16; 5. Kennedy age 14; 6. Geo (not clear) age 12; 7. Adam age 9; Ida (not clear) age 4;10. Hamilton age 3. I will keep searching but have skimmed thro Manitoba and have found nothing. If you have any more details that would help. Pat, The other given name that comes up often is Chistopher. Interesting about the Cliffords though. It's not that common a given name with Johnston families. It certainly sounds like something worth looking into! Cliff. Fortunately before his death in January of 1902 the census enumerator recorded in 1901 the following: Archie Johnstone, born September 14, 1815, Age 86. We have his name in Ontario as Archibald Johnston although the 1881 census lists him as "Johnstone" too. We know from oral family history and another census that he was born in Ireland. We are not sure of where though. Oral family histories from various sources give Counties Antrim, Derry, Down, Cork, Fermanagh and Meath. He went to Upper Canada ca. 1832 and bought a farm next to his brother, Robert Johnston. In the 1880's or thereabouts he went to Melita with some of his children - all adults by then. Cliff. My gg grandfather James Johnston/e also came from possibly Antrim, although I have also heard Londonderry. He had a son Solomon born June 23, 1835 born in Ontario. Then he disappeared and wonder if he went to Manitoba as well, after 1871. I don't know your sources but if you find him, that would be terrific. Also his brother Adam Groves born in 1843 in Ontario. I have a very lengthy family tree about your Archibald Johnston. It has about 4000 names in it. It is a public tree so if you want I will either e-mail the perosn that submitted the tree and give him you e-mail address or else I will just send you the whole thing. The other way you could likely meet some of your relatives. Just let me know. This spring we will go and take a picture and send them to you. His wife is also there. If I happen to forget, do not hesitate to remind me. Lyn from Freindly Manitoba ----- Original Message ----- From: "Cliff. Lyn, Yes, Archie ended up in Melita. He went to Upper Canada ca. 1832 and bought a farm next to his brother, Robert Johnston. In the 1880's or thereabouts he went to Melita with some of his children - all adults by then. Cliff. Hi Lyn, I have seen this info and others. Greetings from Sunny Texas, We recently discovered our Archibald Johnston/e living with his married daughter, Nelly Patterson, in Manitoba, CANADA. If anyone has any information on Archie we would appreciate hearing from you. Good hunting, Cliff. Incidentally, mike, Amy Young's book was published in 1929, not 1924.
