Hi Wendy Not sure yet if the SLOANs my mum knew and mine or yours are related. The ones mum knew were from the town of Antrim in the County of Antrim mine and yours 100 years earlier were from the Ballymena area about 10 miles away. Not impossible though as my gt gt grandparents (Jane's daughter and husband) moved from there to Antrim for work in the linen factory. I will be going to Ireland later in the year as I am still in the process of sorting out the final bits and pieces of the sale of my grandparents house. This time however I will make time to do a bit of research too. Will keep you posted of anything that looks interesting or likely. Hi Ray; I found, some time ago a grave with my HATTON/HUTTON ancestors. I must say though that I don't remember which cemetery it was in. I know Co.Antrim and it was more than likely in Hannastown or Ahoghill's, St. Mary's R.C. I will try to locate that information for you ASAP. It might take a bit of time as my files are packed for a bit. Do you see any connection to this surname? Antrim is a county and a town; Armagh is a county and a city. There isn't an Armagh in Co Antrim or an Antrim in Co Armagh - as far as I know!! Click _http://cain.ulst.ac.uk/images/maps/map3.htm_ (http://cain.ulst.ac.uk/images/maps/map3.htm) for a map of the counties of Northern Ireland. Regards Nevin
forgive my ignorance, but is antrim part of armagh or is it a county on its own, have noted my great grand mother was born according to one paper in antrim, on another armagh, could these be one and the same person? i apologise to any one in ireland but my geography at 76yrs was very limited and never expected to travel god bless you all liz hamilton

For about a decade I have been trying to augment the meager information I have about my Hamill ancestors in Ireland. I have had no success in getting any information about my great grandfather Patrick Hamill other than his name and that he was a farmer. I will appreciate any suggestions. The following summarizes just about all I know about my Hamill ancestors. My maternal grandfather was Charles Hamill, born in 1869. He emigrated from Portglenone (civil parish), County Antrim, Ireland in 1893. He was from the townland of Kilcurry. He was a Catholic and married Jane (Jennie) McLenigan (McClenaghan) in Philadelphia in 1896. Jane had emigrated from the same general area around 1891. She was born in 1872. Charles parents were Patrick Hamill and Elizabeth Duffin. He had siblings named Robert (married to Agnes McCorley), Nancy, Mary Ellen (married to John Kane), and Bernard (Barney). There might have been others. Robert remained in Ireland; the others came to USA. Barney is believed to have settled in Western Pennsylvania or West Virginia. Oral tradition says that Charles was a schoolmaster in Ireland, but I have found no evidence of this. He worked in the construction industry in USA. [The following was written in response to someone who was researching a Patrick Hamill: Besides my great grandfather, the only other Patrick Hamills I know of are mentioned in a book about the area around Portglenone. The book is On the Shining Bann by Robert M. Sibbett. The first of these Patricks is named as one of the grand jurors of the Cashel area on Tuesday, April 10,1792: We appoint Henry O Neill, Charles MFall, Hugh MDill, and John MMeehan to open the old road leading from Patrick Hamills to Charles Graffans dwelling and order proper gates to be put where necessary. From other citations, I believe the dwellings mentioned were in the Townland of Kilcurry. The second is the Rev. Patrick J. Hamill, who became pastor of the RC parish church (St. Marys) of Portglenone in 1877. He was not a native of the area, having been born in Armagh. In 1893 he was transferred to a parish in Belfast. The first of these Patricks might or might not have been connected to either your a! ncestor s or mine. I have as yet not been able to determine.] Researching: Hamill, Duffin, McLenigan, Mulholland, McWilliams, Hart, Dougherty, Clendenning All the Best! Ray MacWilliams

The film at PRONI is of the existing records from Kirkinriola Church. That is the particular church. As I remember, it is very hard to read. My sister actually did that particular film but I remember looking at it trying to help her make out things. If it is of any help, Kirkinriola cemetery is transcribed I think and is at the Ballymena Museum. If you contact them, they will look at the transcription for you, I think. Research by long distance in N. Ireland is difficult. My sister and I ended up hiring a researcher to do some of it for us, even though we have been there twice. Although I must say the best information we found was from talking to people where our families came from. This seems to be as close as you get Lough Neagh (pronounced [lɒx neɪ]; Irish Loch nEathach [lɔx ˈɲahax]) is a freshwater lake in Northern Ireland. The largest lake anywhere in the United Kingdom, the island of Ireland and also the British Isles, with an area of 388 square kilometres (150 square miles), it is also the third largest in Western Europe (after Lake Geneva and Lake Constance). Approximately 30 km (20 mi) long and 15 km (9 mi) wide, Lough Neagh is situated some 30 km (20 mi) to the west of Belfast. It is very shallow around the margins and the average depth in the main body of the lake is about 9 m (30 ft); although at its deepest the lough is about 25 m (80 ft) deep. Hi Scott My 3 x grandmother was Jane SLOAN. I have no details for her other than the marriage to John CUNNINGHAM 28 November 1824 at Grange Presbyterian Church Ardnaglass (Ballyscullion) I had not looked further because until recently I was unsure if this was the right mother for my 2 x grandmother. However on finding a treasure trove of information last year at my grandmother's house I could prove that these were indeed her parents My gt gt grandmother is Nancy (Agnes) CUNNINGHAM. I found the marriage on the IGI but now I know the parenst names are accurate I need to check the church registers for any other information about both families on another future trip over to Ireland some time later this year. John and Jane's children were Jane CUNNINGHAM Nancy (Agnes) John William Robert In case these naming patterns may be similar although it is not conclusive. They lived in the Union of Ballymena, County Antrim. John was from Taylorstown/Gillistown not sure about Jane. If there is a link it will be a generation down from mine as Jane would be born c1800. If there is a relationship then I have pictures of Nancy CUNNINGHAM (their daughter) an Isaac McCARTNEY, Nancy's husband my gt gt grandparents. I will keep your email and if I find any further info on a visit will be in touch. Have you joined the Ulster Ancestry site it is free just log on - they have a separate list for each province so you could join the Antrim list and ask the same questions? http://www.ulsterancestry.com/ Eg if you check on their free look up you will find 153 known SLOANS living in Antrim between 1848 - 1864. I am looking for the family and or ANY information on my GG Grandfather Robert Sloan, born approximately 1832 in Ulster Province, Northern Ireland, died after 1882, probably Brooklyn, New York, USA, but possibly in Ireland. He married a Mary Ann Fisher, b. 1846, Ulster Province, d. aft 1882 in Brooklyn. They were married around 1864/1865. Supposedly they were from the Ballymena area, and probably were Protestant (Church of Ireland) He immigrated to the USA in 1882 aboard the ship ³State of Indiana². Occupation listed as Ocarpenter/joiner¹. Immigrating with him was a son, John Fisher Sloan, b. abt 1868, Ulster Province, d. 17 Oct 1915 in Brooklyn. Any help would be greatly appreciated...
