I would recommend using the US Census data which are now at Ancestry.com through 1930 If you can find your extended family in the US (assuming you are in the US), your chances of finding a 4th or 5th cousin who has papers from the 1800s. I was able to find 4th cousins in two of my lines who had letters and/or journals from the 1800s which served to pinpoint where their grandparents and/or parents lived in Ireland. **************Create a Home Theater Like the Pros. I can tell you what my sister and I did the first time we went to Ballymena. We looked in the Griffith's valuation, found out where any Stevenson's and Mortons were in Kildowney, Dungall and Carnlea. We got a really good map, compared it to the Griffith's maps at the library and then found a house that was still on the property in Kildowney and went there and knocked on the door. The woman who lived said her mother in law was a Stevenson and called her daughter - and it went on and on meeting new cousins. We have knocked on a lot of doors and written a lot of letters. The best way to find out about the past there is to find someone who is willing to talk about it, even if they aren't related to you. We found out quite a bit by talking to the man who lives next to the empty house where Peter Morton lived in Dungall. They old people know all about everyone :) and most people there are related to each other in one way or another. If you could give me an idea of who and where you are looking, I might have some other ideas for you. But for sure - go to the Mid Antrim Museum (used to be the Ballymena Museum but they moved to a new building) They have cemetery transcriptions for most of the cemeteries. The Ballymena Library has some stuff including the maps for the Griffiths and the census films. PRONI in Belfast is loaded with good things. I can tell you how to find some of the cemeteries if you want to walk through them. Hi If you really want help and advice you should ensure the subject line of your message reflects the message content. For instance, what has finding accommodation etc in Antrim to do with an article in a Pittsburgh newspaper regarding misbehaviour at a football match?. I read this article when it was first listed and have been deleting others with the same heading since but accidentally opened the one to which I am responding. As I said, if you want information ensure your subject line is accurate and you might just get a better response. Ian A C Scott
This time we are staying at a place in Carnlough on the water for two weeks. That is where we stayed in July last year. We stayed at the Leighinmohr Hotel in Ballymena other times. One place to eat that we liked a lot was Harry's in Cushendall. I also like the restaurant at the Leighinmohr. We ate there pretty much every night when we were there a few years ago. Mostly because we were out researching all day and were back late and too tired to find someplace else. And they let us eat in the bar instead of the restaurant and the food was great. Best food was at our different cousins houses :) This time we will be at PRONI a lot and also have a long list of people we want to talk to and are hoping to be able to photograph the burial books that are at the Burough Council Office in Ballymena. But we haven't gotten permission to do it yet. Still working on it. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of John Montgomery Sent: Friday, March 28, 2008 5:21 AM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [IRL-ANTRIM] Ballymena made the newspaper in Pittsburgh, PA Are you staying at the same address each night or are you moving around, I live near Ballymena and wasn't at the football match. Imagine my surprise when I opened our local paper today to find an article about a recent soccer match. >From Page 17 of the Pittsburgh Tribune Review: "A recent soccer match in Ireland ended with angry Ballymena United fans tossing - among other things - a chair, a bottle and a leg of lamb onto the field after a 2-2- tie against Lisburn Distillery, the BBC reported. At the heart of the matter was referee Mark Courtney, whose decisions made dyed-in-the-wool Ballymena fans irate. So, when the match ended, the mutton flew. Hello listers; I am having difficulty with the family of Margaret ONEILL, b. 1871/72 apparently Belfast. St. Anne's Belfast parish marriage record, 1891, gave father as Paul O'Neill. Residence was 22 Hallidays Road, Belfast. It doesn't seem that her birth was registered, and there is no sign of Paul O'Neill or others. Just possibly she wasn't from Belfast, as she married David MCLEAN born 1872 Ballyboley Antrim. Some family claim an older sister Mary who married a Banfield and they farmed in Ballyboley. Any ideas would be appreciated. Lorilee Ontario, Canada
Listers I an trying to find further information on the parents, sibling and ancestors of MARGARET HAMILTON born around 1822 in Antrim. She married HUGH SHANNON on 12 October 1838 in Glasgow. Her parents were JOHN HAMILTON and ELIZA MARTIN as shown on Margaret's death certificate. Everywhere I have searched has drawn a blank so I am hoping some listers will be able to assist. Thanks Andrew
Hello Nevin, Thanks for the suggestion. You may be right. It's interesting to find Brannan?Brennan and Hardy families in the same district. Though my people must have been in Scotland by 1851 they could be relatives. Where is Drummaul? He was said to be in the Orange lodge - she a Catholic. regards Dan Hardie On Saturday, March 22, 2008, at 10:09 AM, [email protected] wrote: > Dan, the surname Brennan is often pronounced Brannan and there are > lots of > Brennans in Co Antrim. Hi Jane, You mentioned a cousin researching the Tuller line. I am a Tuller and would be pleased to be put in touch with your cousin. Thank you, Carol
What about the surnames BRANYAN or BRANNION? Are they interchangeable with Brennan and Brannan/Brannon? My gr-grandmother was Grace Branyan (born 1825) m. William H. Stewart. I can't find her. William's brother was listed as being from County Down on his death certificate. Any suggestions? Thanks, Carol
Hi all, My father’s grandfather was Daniel Hardie a Journeyman stonemason and his wife was Mary ( O.N. Brannan.) Family mythology places them in Ballymenney before coming to Glasgow - a mixed marriage some time before 1851. I assume this could be Ballymoney or Ballymena. I have found no Hardys in later records for Ballymoney but a number of BDM’s for Daniel Hardy and other Hardys in and around Ballymena and Ahogill. All of them were after 1860. The spelling seems to have changed in Scotland to Hardie. So far no luck with Brannan’s in either district. I would be pleased to hear from any member who might be researching these families or otherwise has information that might help pin them down. regards Dan Hardie
Dan, the surname Brennan is often pronounced Brannan and there are lots of Brennans in Co Antrim. I see a Daniel Hardy and a Hugh Brennan in the parish of Drummaul, Co Antrim in 1861. Nevin _NALIL - North Antrim Local Interest List_ (http://nalil.blogspot.com/)

Thank you also, Rick for your help. I have the book on Antrim gravestones but can't quite make the connection. It would appear that the gravestone for William McCulloch in St. Cedma's is not the one I'm looking for as his mother's name was Janet, not Margaret. But I will follow up on your other suggestions. Valerie, I used a researcher to find John McCalmont's birth date and place as well as his brother and sister's. I was living in Papua New Guinea at the time so that was my only way forward. From there I have traced the family in the 1861, 1871 and 1881 Scotland census, living in Dalry, Ayrshire, using Scotland's People and Ancestry. A Scottish researcher found the deaths in Dalry of William, Jane and James McCalmont and, on a visit to Dalry, I found a List of Deaths in the library on which James had the misfortune to be the only person with the word "pauper' next to his name. I have so far found 24 variations of the spelling of the name "McCalmont". As a new member of this mailing list,I am very happy to have received such a positive response to my query and I thank you all. Hi, Yes, it sounds as if they were Presbyterian, as were my Burnsides. Have you checked the Church of Ireland records? I have been told that sometimes families joined that church even though they might have been Presbyterian. I guess it made life a little easier for them.
