    3. Anne, Well, I got up enough courage to call one Burnside listing. The Rev. M. I thought that would be a good start as it was unlikely he would not be nice to me. Fondly enough his family has all the same forenames as mine so he said he would ask his father if he might know anything. He said he had helped many people from the US trace their roots with church records. Will call more tomorrow. Linda

    3. You probably have this already, but here are the Burnsides from the Tithe Applotment. Killyree is north of Ballymena, Gallygarvy is north east of Ballymena, Loughmagary is north of Ballymena. The map I have up on the wall doesn't cover any area except about 10 miles around Ballymena. Alexr.     3. Hi, Linda and other Antrim-listers-- When I was in Glenarm several years ago looking to find some cousins, there were no phone book listings with the?surname I was looking for. I happened into the local community center to see if they could help me. No one was in the office, but a group of older ladies were having a knitting circle in the building, and they were wonderfully helpful.?They directed me to the farm that my ancestors used to own and told me how to find some cousins (none of whom still had the surname, but they remembered the maiden name of one cousin's mother). The first cousin I happened on told me about many others. The highlight of my visit was tea with a distant cousin who had a family tree painted on the wall of her entryway. I showed her where it had my great-grandfather's name at the end of one branch with the designation "went to Canada." I told her she should put a postscript on that: ". . .and had twelve children!" So--remember, old ladies (and probably old men, too) have loooonng memories! I don't know about Ballymena because it's quite populous, but people in the small towns of Antrim have local family connections that go back for centuries. I have found most Irish people to be very hospitable, warm and friendly, and I think most of them really like having Americans come back to the "ould sod" looking for their roots. Good luck! I am English and I don't mind people contacting me, but what I would say is give them a little bit of back ground and explain you are doing your family tree. I was researching my family tree up in Lancashire, which is not an area I am familiar with - anyway we found a house where my great uncle had lived, which had obviously been sold on and much to our suprise it was up for sale again. I asked my husband to take some photos for me, and he was doing this when a man walked up to us and asked what we thought we were doing (as he lived there he was on the defensive) when I explained the family connection and showed him the family tree I had with me, he was quite happy for us to take pictures infact he asked if we would like to look round the house which of course we did. It was really fantastic to be able to go inside. As I say if you explain about your tree and research you will find most people happy to answer your questions.     3. Don't I wish! I have been working with two cousins but none of us know more than the fact that our gggg grandfather said on his naturalization papers he was born in Antrim. One of his five sons say they were born in Down and another - Antrim. We do not know about the other two. I am also on two Rootsweb mailing lists in Beaver and Butler Counties in western PA. but no one else seems to be researching this name. I have land records, wills, and nat. papers but I think their early arrival date - 1817 - is my main stumbling block. Years ago (1981/82) I visited PA for the first time and met many cousins. One had a huge album filled with Burnside pictures. I took several pictures but many did develop well. Now, I can not find the person who had the album. I am going to visit the area in a couple of weeks and intend to place an announcement in the local paper asking about it. Also want to get a maker for a Burnside school now long gone. Hopefully I can stir up someone who knows more than I do. Would be helpful if I knew more than one maiden name of all those sons and the father - but we don't.     3. How incredible. I thought someone had sent me (months ago) two Burnside names still in telephone directories. Obviously, I was mistaken. Many years ago I called down two lists of names (I was adopted and my Mom helped me to have my records opened - she had a friend at the court house) and the info I learned got me hooked on genealogy. But, that said, I hesitate calling people in a country in which I do not live. Do you think anyone would be offended if I did call? I know when I visit the UK every year I am careful what I say and how I act. I don't think the English are quite as brash as Americans and I do not want to be offensive in any way.     3. That's a great story! I have two people who have offered to help me at PRONI and perhaps Linen Hall but I know I will be on my own knocking on doors. My huge problem is my Burnsides left Ulster in 1817. A father, wife, five sons, and their families. I think your map idea sounds good - maybe some of the family stayed behind but so far I do not even know the area. My two friends from the UK and I chose Ballymena because of the location - close to Belfast (for my research) and not far from the north coast. Thank you so much for the ideas.     3. Hello - Looking for John Irvine family from Carnmoney Parish in Co. Antrim. Had children named James, Gertie, Sallie (Sara?), Maggie (Margaret?) and Samuel. James emigrated to Philadelphia c. 1863 and worked as a coachman for a wealthy Philadelphian. Married Fanny White, also from NI, in late 1870's in Philadelphia. Believe James' parents may have been John and Elizabeth Irvine as the birthdate of April 6, 1846 and christening parish both match. Am also wondering if the Antrim/Belfast area Irvines were any kin to the Generals Irvine of the American Revolution since Fermanagh and Antrim are neighbors. Thanks in advance for any assistance!
