Hello Pat, Regarding your McERLEAN family. My grandmother was Margaret (Maggie) McERLEAN who married Owen McCOMB in Belfast in 1909. Maggie was born in 1878 in Ardnaglass, Co. Antrim (according to her birth certificate). They had children: Margaret, Joseph (my father), Sean, Stephen and Theresa. I know I have first cousins in N. Ireland and the U.S.A. and I would love to be in contact with them. Any connection do you think. Kindest regards. Linda - it was not until 1866 that the English doctor, John Langdon Down published a description of the condition, which subsequently took his name so I doubt there would be any records dating back that far. I have just realized I have not turned over this particular stone. My gggg grandfather Robert Burnside had one son who had some type of mental problem. I know he lived with at least 3 families with small children so I am thinking it was probably Down's Syndrome or perhaps he was just "slow thinking". Thanks! I can recall that 2 of my Dad's aunts went back to Ireland (no one knows where) in the 1920's to visit kin. All were dead and buried - none living at all. One kept a detailed journal with tombstone inscriptions, etc., but the journal has been lost in time. Just one more of genealogy's wee frustrations... Cliff. There are Johnsons/Johnstons in the 1740 Protestant Householders' Returns near Ballymena. But maybe that is too early. These are the ones from Kilconway Barony, Dunaghy Parish (just a bit north of Ballymena city) Jas., David, Jas., Joh, Will In the 1800's I know there are Johnsons up near Clough. I also know that a "Bertie" Johnson lives in Dungall right now, next to my Peter Morton's old house because I talked to him on one of my trips there. Al, There are McClure families emigrating to America as part of the 1718 Migration and settlement of New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, and South Carolina. John McClure of Woburn and David McClure of Brookfield, both in Massachusetts, are found in early circa 1718 church records. Samuel and Richard McClure are the first elected Elders of the new Presbyterian Church in Boston, Massachusetts on 14 July 1730. McClure's are also found in early records in PA and SC. The only "documented" McClure is DAVID of Candia and Chester, New Hampshire. He moved from Edinburgh, Scotland circa 1720 then emigrated to America in 1740. He married Martha Glenn possibly in Northern Ireland. Samuel McClure's grandson Rev. David McClure published a Diary with some family genealogy inserted into the book. I have not seen that diary, but it may contain the source for the families connection to Ireland and Scotland. If any of the early American McClure's are in your family, I'd be very interested in what you have found on the family. Hi Macha- I don't have any records of a Margaret McErlean born 1878 in Ardnaglass, Co. Antrim married to Owen McCOMB in Belfast in 1909. I have a copy of a letter from Felix McKillop stating that my Great great grandmother Elizabeth McErlean McQuillan had brothers John (born 1852), Arthur & James (born 1854 -- both emigrated to Australia), but no information given about their children. Given the small size of the population, the relatively low incidence of the McErlean name, and the extent of intermarriage in the Glens of Antrim, it seems likely we are some degree of cousins -- so Hi Cuz! from sunny but chilly Maryland. Thanks Colin, My McClure connection is to the ones that stayed in Ireland. I have noticed the family is Presbyterian and firmly established in county Antrim. My connection is through a sister of my great grandfather who married a M'Clure. Not much to go on but she was a Sarah J. Valentine and I was hoping to find if they have any present day descendent either in Ireland or anywhere else. Not much to go on I am afraid, but you never know. Yes- when I save the email for another time and research- it is much better to have an actual subject line referring to the email- looking back in a saved list of emails- it is very time consuming with same subject lines- also not necessary to just reply all and get back your new added to all of the old- wipe out all but what you are referring to- that will help lots- or if a new subject- start fresh as I did and change subject line. thank you Don! perhaps some emailers are unaware of these options - just give it a try and you'll be up to a new level. Can I encourage Group members to consider net - etiquette in two ways. Replying to Emails Before you hit reply to all, or even reply to one email consider the fact that every email in the digest will then be re-posted. It doesn't take much more time to be considerate of others, cut and paste your looped response or query, go to the bottom of the IRL-ANTRIM email and click on "To post a message to the IRL-ANTRIM mailing list, send an email to [email protected] It really as easy as that and it saves having reams and reams of non-descript html archival stuff that no one but you, is interested in. Subject Matter The other problem with reply or reply to all [apart from re-sending the whole of the digested email] is that your subject line normally has nothing whatsoever to do with your re-post. My email isn't meant to be critical but only to highlight the fact that many others would appreciate email etiquette ensuring those who subscribe in digest mode see the actual subject of an email and don't have to scroll through a myriad of pages to get to the next email. Thanks All Don in Melbourne

Do many of the Ulster towns have Historical Societies, as this is one great way to find ones roots in any town... I believe Ballyclare has one.. as here in NZ many areas have them as well.. our local one, in Carterton, I was there when we started the Museum etc... and was able to get historical records and books to help folk trace their family.. Ulster was world famous for its flax industry. Ulster Linen Mills... beautiful handkerchife's... tea towels... my spell checker doesnt like hankie spelling! I have roots in Ballyclare and Whitehead... Campbell's in both towns.. late ..Uncle Robert was Math's teacher for years at Ballyclare High School... Hi Everyone, Does anyone have any info, or ideas how to get it, on relatives of the following: In 1793 in southwest antrim county (Crumlin area or possibly Glenavy or Aghagallon areas) Rosanna Toland, born ca1771, daughter of Henry Toland & Elizabeth Mc(C)Alpin(e) married Daniel Barry. He, Daniel, was a tutor for family of John Heyland, whose place was called "glenoak", later "Glendarragh". I think that may be the origin of those place names which exist today in eastside of Crumlin. Daniel Barry, born 1769, was raised in/near Banbridge district of county Down. He was a son of John Barry & wife Eleanor Diamond. We plan to visit those areas of co Antrim & co Down on April 9. Would like to make contact with people who are descendants of those surnames or an area historian/genealogist. My wife is not into genealogy, but still we could spend a few hours visiting relevant graveyards, churches, townlands & distant relatives. Names, locations, or other suggestions would be most appreciated. Thank you in advance. Jerry Miley (usa)
Thank you for the email. I do have the names for the Ballymoney area. I don't believe I have any connection to this family but I don't remember seeing some of the other towns. I will copy this email and do some more research. Do you know (without having to look it up) where Dunaghy, Kilyree was or is located? As my Burnside families left in 1817 I think the 1825 would be a good place to start. I had actually thought about looking in the area of Ahoghill because a family by the name of McConahy lived there and was suppose to have immigrated at the same time. I do know where they are. Tomorrow I will copy a map for you so you can see for yourself. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Linda Holley Sent: Friday, March 28, 2008 8:26 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [IRL-ANTRIM] Burnsides, etc. - try the phone book and locate families by that name Thank you for the email. Once again, thank you for this material!
