Hi Bairbre. Thanks for that. I wrote what I think it is on the certificate. Of course, it could be something entirely different!! I'm not good at deciphering handwriting, esp. writing written in the early part of the 20th century!! Can anyone tell me anything about Portglenone? My gggrandfather & mother were RC so, would it be a predominantly RC area or protestant? What would the local RC church be? If you lived there, and wanted to emigrate to Australia, where would be the most likely place of departure? They emigrated here to Oz in 1857. Thanks. Gee whiz!! Thanks so much. It feels like it is raining manna from heaven here!! Of course I now have another question!! Where is Garvaghy & Mullinsallagh?? Would these places have RC churches?? Would anyone know if there is a RIC barracks nearby now, or back in 1854 - 1857? My gg-grandparents were married in 1856 in this place. From my ggrandfather's death certificate , it looks like Fort/Port Glenone. I am not familiar with the name or area, so would anyone be able to help me determine what the name might be? Thomas McEvoy was my gg - grandfather's name. He was born in Co Wicklow and stationed in Co Antrim with the RIC. His wife - Charlotte Ennis was born in Co Antrim in c1843. Her age at marriage was listed as 15yrs in 1856. I have a similar place name in my records. Portglinone, Northern Ireland is the birth place of Ellen Fullerton. She married in Chicago in 1903 and raised her children in Janesville WI. **************Planning your summer road trip? Check out AOL Travel Guides. It is also on Ancestry if you have a subscription to that. You find it by going Search, card catalog (on the right side of screen) and then put in Griffith (not Griffith's) in the keyword. For some reason a search on Ancestry for Ireland doesn't bring up the Griffth's or the Tithe. Also doesn't seem to come up in a list of Ireland databases - at least for me. There both on the townlands on the eastern fringe of the small town of Portglenone. A townland is the name given to a few hundred acres of territory. Hi Al, I looked up each name at Irish Townland Maps where I have a subscription. I am new to all of this but this is what I did find: Drumnaglea is a Townland in the Parish of Grange of Dundermot. Note the different spelling. There were several Ballylig listings for Ballylig. Again, note different spelling: Ballylig (Barony of Cary) Ballylig (Barony of Kilconway) Ballylig (Barony of Lower Antrim) Ballylig (Barony of Lower Belfast) Ballylig (Intake) Baronly of Lower Belfast) I thought that made things clear as mud so I did a search on Google and came up with this: Ballylig is a Townland in the Parish of Killagan I suspect that is what you are looking for but included the other information in case it would be of any use to you. FYI: I was pointed to Irish Townland Maps at www.pasthomes.com from someone when I was looking for Bracknamuckley Townland and have found it to be very helpful. I believe it costs $25 for an annual subscription. It shows the old Ordinance Survey Maps but does not include the lot numbers. Hope this helps. Debbie Greer Hennessey
Thanks to all of you for your help. It is properly sorted out now that I have the correct spellings. Ire-Atlas is really a wonderful site and I was able to verify all the entries. Spelling is the bugbear but the site even helps with that, but its nice to know that there are so many prepared to lend a hand. Can anyone please tell me where I would look for records in St. Anne's District of Belfast. Was this a parish or something completely different in 1817? Thank you for any help, Linda
