Dear Kathleen, As regards to "Bog Irishman" one has to first take into account the fact that a good portion of Ireland is covered with peat bogs or marshland where peat is harvested for fuel. The peat having been formed from decayed vegetation. Secondly, it is an age-old term that was applied by some British to define the Irish peasantry and especially those who lived among the bogs. See enclosed reference: "Bog Trotters" is a long-standing English term for Irish people, especially Irish peasants. They are shown here as near imbeciles, frolicking over the countryside.
