Roy, Couldn't find a Catherine and Ann in the 1870 Census for either NY or RI. Did find a family in RI in 1880 in Burrillville which is in Providence County but up near the Mass border, as follows: John Hanley, 62,Head, works in Woolen Mill, b Ire, parents Ireland, can read and write Eliza Hanley, 58, Wife, keeping house, b. Ire, parents Ireland, can read and write. Catherine Hanley, 17, daughter, in Woolen Mill, b. NY, parents Ireland, cannot read or write Ann Hanley, 11, daughter, no occup, b. NY, parents Ireland, cannot read or write. John J. 9, son, at school, b. RI, parents Ireland, attended school w/in year, can read and write. Using that family I tried to go backwards to 1870 without any luck. There is a John Hanley in the 1850 Census in Kings County Ward 6 (Brooklyn), age 26 with an older woman, Bridget Hanley, age 55,could be his mother, he is a day laborer. Both born Ireland. There is a John Hanley age 30 in the same census year in New York County (Manhattan) appears to be single, no related family with him, a hosteler (teamster?) living with a stable owner. Also born Ireland. Both of these men seem to be the right age to be the John Hanley in the 1880 Census. But 1860 and 70 are no help so far. Do you know the names of Catherine and Ann's parents?
