The FHC in Plainview, Long Island, has most of the NYC vital records indexes and many of the actual document films. I used to live in Port Jefferson and went there every Friday or Saturday. I live in Atlanta since 2003, but if I remember correctly, it is exit 46 on the LIE. I spent two days at the library on Fifth Ave in NYC, a treasure trove. Try some of the other ones on Long Island by calling them in advance.
