    3. Your mention of females traveling alone and being detained could explain the many times I have viewed ship manifests from New York Harbor in which there was a "check" mark beside every female who appeared alone or without male companions. I never knew about their detention until mentioned on this list. Indeed it would be good to know how to access such lists. Anyone know WHERE they were detained? Location of records?     3. I think they were detained right at Ellis Island. The lists of detained passengers are at the end of the manifests. Some were detained for illness, some were apparently deported.
