Keep in mind when trying to find these marriage certificates, that most couples were married in the church the bride attended before marriage. Also, I was able to get information from St. John the Baptist on 210 West 31st Street in NYC. They were extremely helpful. Of eight other churches, only four responded tho' I sent the required donation. Good Luck In Your search. Hi everyone, I've been doing research in NYC and have received marriage certs and got great information from there. However, due to a post the other day, I'm intrigued. What is the difference between a NYC marriage License and NYC marriage registration/certificate? Where are these held? And did they have to get both or just one to get married? Thanks for your help! A marriage certificate was issued by the Health Department from 1866-1937. The index is online at IGG. It was recorded after the wedding took place. The records are available through Muni Archives or the FHL. From 1853-1866(and through 1887) a marriage register was kept.(Yes from 1866-1887 there are two civil records although they have same information) It was a one line ledger book recording the information AFTER the wedding. It was the same records essentially as the certificates information wise between 1866-1887.(1888 groom index exists for ledgers but not the ledgers themselves) In 1908 marriage licenses were required before the wedding could take place. From 1908-1937 there are couples that have one or the other or both. These are not online or at the FHL. They do give more information especially if a divorce preceded the marriage. It gives better places of birth than other records too. These are at Muni Archives from 1908-1929 with an "index" too. Bets to have a date or at least a good guess. Staff will not look up without a date and EXPRESS request. If you don't specify they search Department of Health. Licenses were returned after the wedding with a signed certificate on back. It is three sides total, affidavit filled out by couple, license, and certificate filled in/signed by minister, couple and witnesses.
