Greetings All. On my return home from Calgary last Monday evening I arrived to find my fax machine literally buried with faxes from those who have submitted Access to Information requests for the 1906 Census of the Western Provinces to either Statistics Canada and/or the National Archives. Since that time I have received a few more by snail mail, and some as attachments to email. All told however, things have slowed down considerably. Submitting the ATI requests is an action that is intended to last for awhile, as is writing to the Privacy Commissioner to protest his opposition to public access of Historic Census records. For those who are not yet familiar with these latest efforts in our Census campaign, they are explained in my latest column, accessible at http://globalgazette.net/gazce/gazce83.htm By this time, many will be aware that the National Archives of Canada have placed images of Canada's 1901 Census schedules on line. There is no charge for access to these images, although it takes a little work to find the images you want, and many appear to have problems with the viewer that is required to be downloaded and installed before you can view and manipulate the images. Problems seem most prevalent for those using Netscape. Internet Explorer seems to work OK. Go to the following URL to access the images. http://www.archives.ca/02/020122_e.html I recommend reading the support information before trying to access the images. For those who have experienced problems using the Mr. Sid viewer required for viewing the images, Nelson Denton has started a mail list for those who wish to comment, ask questions, or get help related to the online Census. To subscribe to it send a message to CAN-CENSUS-1901-L-request@rootsweb.com with only the word 'subscribe' in the subject line and body of the message.
