I was at the movies last night and saw a preview for a movie called "Gangs of New York" that I think many of you will want to see. It is a movie about NYC and the 5 points area during the 1840's to the 1860's. It depicts the gang warfare between the Nativist and the Irish gangs for control of the neighborhoods in lower Manhattan. From the shots shown in the preview the depiction of 5 points, the ships and the South Street Wharf's, all seemed very realistic. The move is set for release at Christmas time. I found a website that the film producers have set up talking about the movie. Please look over the site, because it describes the movie alot better than I have. Here is a link to the site: http://www.thegangsofnewyork.com/ Does anyone have any other movies they can recommend about NYC and emigrants in the mid 1800's? I am sure there must be some movies out there. Thanks, Don McGovern researching: McGovern, 4th Ward of Manhattan, 1849 - 1880 __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! The movie, directed by Martin Scorsese and starring Leonardo DiCaprio is based on the 1928 (yes, 1928) book by Herbert Asbury. It is currently out (reprinted) in paperback by Thunder's Mouth Press (2001). A worthwhile read. Best regards. Nancy.
